Spent the last 4 weeks trying to buy a Ford Focus for the missus.

We are after a 1.8 Zetec, 3dr, with all the toys - A/C, EW, EM, etc etc but there are none available.

Managed to find one at a Ford dealers with 29,000 miles, but it had missed its second service in the history and had a huge scratch in the bumper.

Bloody nightmare.

Dream Weaver, looks like we'll be bidding for the same cars then, as that's what I'm after for my wife.
What colour you after and where abouts in the country are you looking ?

lol snap. Im looking for a 1.6/1.8 Zetec 5dr in black or silver. Gotta have air-con. Nothing around privately - auto trader is empty unless you want a crappy pepper red or champagne gold colour.

My local Ford dealer has loads in stock though but I aint paying dealer prices.

Ebay prices look quite good but I would want an RAC check, HPI etc before parting with my cash.

Brand new 1.8 Zetecs at BramhallQuicks garages - have upgrade from 1.6, climate pack, grand cashback and a few other bits to tempt you, for £11,695 sounds cheap to me even for a focus.

I'm in Lancs/Yorks, so we should be OK

Went to look at one tonight at Skipton Ford. Was advertised as a 2000 X reg 1.8 Zetec with all the toys for £8495. It was in pepper red unfortunately (burgandy), but we cant be fussy now.

The price was £1k over book, so I went armed with Autotrader ads, and the What car value.

Got there and it was only £7495, yippee, thought we were in luck. Turned out to be a 1.6 GRRRR

40 mile round trip for nowt.

Some good prices on there Chris - pity they are 130 miles from me

Am I correct in thinking you recently bought a Focus? If so what spec and what do you think to it?

We had a Focus 1.8 Zetec 3 dr - very unreliable. Got rid of it before the lease was up, it was such a bad car. Never again.

Even the new 1.6 Zetec hired by work for a trip to Liverpool recently, had problems.

I brought an ex-demo '02 Focus 1.6 zetec with the climate pack (air con and heated front screen) and metallic paint. No ball of fire but I get 36mpg, consistantly (my RA on same journeys gets 17mpg). Nice interior, good quality CD player and comfortable and handling isnt bad. Its a bit underpowered (100bhp) but insurance is group 5 I think. I am looking at ungrading mine to a 2.0litre ghia or an ST170. Currently my only reference point is my RA and my dads V6 so it will feel slow in comparsion.

Yes people have problems with them but people have problems with scoobs as well. It just that they sell loads more Focus so more cars have problems. Percentage wise for number slod may be interesting though. teh foucs won a German (TUV ??) realiability award recently so they cant be that bad .

I bought a 1.8 zetec 3 1/2 years ago (for insurance purposes.. had 11 points on my licence).. haven't had a bit of bother with it at all.. most reliable car i've ever had. Only ever had to spend money on tyres, servicing and new brake pads/discs...

Wish I could say the same about the paintwork though. It seems to scratch if you look at the bloody thing! Think its painted with watercolours....

I had a 1.8 Ghia - metallic navy blue, a/c, climate pack. Was a great car except the central locking kept failing and if you left it for more than 24 hours the battery would go flat. Sold it as too unreliable. It was on a W-reg and I only got £7k for it a year ago.

I had a Black 2.0 Zetec 3 door for a company car a couple of years back and had to wait 17 weeks for delivery Not sure if that was due to the spec or the time it took for the lease company to get their finger out

Completely reliable for the 2 years I had it. Only gripe was the thirst - didn't get much more than mid-high twenties mpg which is pants for something with only 130bhp!!

Just filled my 1.6 zetec up and put in 41.97 litres of optimax. Trip said I had covered 358.6 miles since last fill up.

41.97 litres = 9.2 gallons

358.6/9.2 = 38.9mpg

Scoob I dont bother to work out but I know its sub 20 .

I can't remember what MPG I got in the 1.6 Zetec I had on hire a couple of months ago, but it wasn't anything like that... Had I been paying for the fuel, I'd have been very disappointed.

Cheers

I always do a quick calculation when I fill up and the last 3 fill ups have all been around 36 mpg. I havent done anything differently. The only thing which may have helped is that with the school holidays there is less start stop and get to work quicker .

I normally run on Shell NUL but have tried a tank of optimax just to see if it makes any difference to the economy or running.

Most of my trip to work is dual carriageway which also helps and also I go through 11 speeed cameras about 15 miles in total distance a day.

Few traffic jams around here, and the thing still wouldn't do decent mileage. Even on a run down to my Mum-in-Law's in Taunton (315 miles), it still struggled to do more than 25mpg. We used to take the Impreza in the end - used to get about the same mileage and we got there a lot quicker! And it was greater fun!

All 4 dealers said there was nothing wrong with the car.

I brought it as an economical runabout and would be going mad if I was getting 25mpg. When I got the salesman (whose car it was ex-demo) said he got mid 30s in it. So when I have consistently got 35+mpg and 40+mpg on long runs I thought this was the norm.

I was even suprised at my dad who came back from a long trip and he said he got 36mpg on his trip computer which wasnt bad for the duratec 2.5 V6 in his Mondeo.

re: the 2.0 focus I don't know if your car had a problem but I've had a few Focii(LOL) Mondeos etc with various engines. The 1.8 petrol would get around 35mpg on a long run the 2.0 petrol about 32 mpg and that was booting it. 25mpg sounds iffy to me, even the 2.0 mondeos I had did about 30mpg.

The whole car was iffy, which is why we got rid before the lease was up. I won't bother listing all the problems. 4 dealers in 3 counties couldn't fix it, and Ford didn't want to know.

The hire car wasn't so hot either. I'm sure it was less than 30mpg - and sooooooooo slow.

I know I drive things hard, but my 02 WRX PPP gave 27mpg on the run to Fort William at Easter, including 100mph cruise up the M6/A74(M)from Penrith to Glasgow, and my Wife's 03 GX Sportswagon gave us 37mpg on the same trip this Summer.

The GX gives her 7mpg better than the Focus, on the same journey to work.

Ours was a great car when it started. Handling was excellent for a "normal" family car, much better than my current Golf TDi 130. I also really liked the heated front screen.
It wasn't as economical as we'd hoped - used to get about 30mpg from the 1.8.
