For me the Cossie used to be cool, but now when I see one I only think 'is that a real one or a 1.4 with some plastic add-ons'. Unless you want 400bhp+ go for the P1.

In relation to Spudguns comments, I agree an Evo could be the answer. Certainly a happy medium anyway.
However, I feel the only thing that put that out of the equation for me was the fact that they were still regarded as "grey imports". Unfortunately, this will always for some crazy reason, mean it won't be just as desirable when you come to sell it on,not to mention servicing and insurance probs.
Similar problem with some Scoobs (Type R version). They are just as quick as a P1 but a lot of people out there still prefer a UK car, whereas the P1 and Cossie are on the same platform. Do an insurance quote comparison and you'll prob find that they want a good few hundred quid more for the Cossie....

I think the EVO VI Ralliart version is considered a UK car by some insurance companies as it was sold officially by Mitsubishi UK, so the inurance could well be in line with a P1 or Escort Cosworth.
With regards to servicing, no problems there either as Mitsubishi will service imports just like (practically identical) UK supplied cars and there are also loads of specilaists like Power Engineering for example.
The way I see it is that the P1 and EVO VI are streets ahead of an Escort Cosworth in standard form in almost every way (they are much newer after all) and only if you want to get more than 400 bhp out of your car without spending quite so much could it really be recommended above these IMO.
P1 or EVO then? Difficult - both are superb but I'd go for the EVO as it has the edge on brakes, outright grip, tunability and exclusivity.

Sorry to say this the big money for cossies are for totally standard versions and a totally standard escort cossie wouldnt know which way a P1 went. If you mod the escort cossie then you are knocking money off, unless you go for a real stormer but then you are limited when you come to sell it and try and recoupe some of the cash you have put into it.

Drive them both and make your own mind up.
Having driven both, i know which one you'll go for.
P1 everytime!
Cossies really do feel as old as they are, although i'll always think they look the nuts.........but looks aren't everything!

Cossies are lovely, but out of the box a P1 would kill it.
If modding is your thing however (big Bhp???) then it will have to be the Cos. Average mods only then P1 it is

Not forgetting that Cossies were de-tuned for the road and the big turbos can easily get 300bhp for little money....It'd have to be a Cossy for me. Then the P1 wouldn't know which way it'd gone Even if both cars had the same power, handling, traction, etc it'd still be a Cossy, as it just carries the looks so much better IMO
Now if you'd of said a 22b then I might have persuaded myself for that

The cars power output doesn't necessarily make it fast on the road. What makes a car fast and pleasurable to drive fast is its balance between power, handling and braking. This is what makes a car fast from A to B. If you ask me, a standard P1 has this pretty much perfect. Uprate the brakes and its spot on. On the other hand (IMO) a big turbo Escort cossie, running big boost, is far from as balanced. Having driven a few such examples, i find that the engine out weighs the cars handling, making it harder to make quick progress. An escort cossie will probably drive best when putting out about 280-300 bhp, but i honestly dont think that it will be half as good a drivers car as the P1. All IMO.

Ps, Cos does look nice though.......but P1 isnt exactly ugly!

pmsl when you actually drive a cossie you will end up changing your mind....
And buy the P1.
Yeah cossies can be made to go fast, but they rust, they rattle, they handle badly, they attract ***** (even more than scoobs do) & are incredably dated now.
I wanted a cossie beforeI bought a scoob then I drove 3 "mint known" ars & they were the biggest letdown of my life as a performance car

I was in a similar position about 6 Months ago and my heart nearly ruled my head. I grew up with the Escort Cossie as my icon in the nineties but in the end i bought the P1 simply because it's a newer car with more modern technology (on the outside). Mind you, I wish I had a heated front screen on my P1...
Both cars IMHO have something special about them that will make them both classics in years to come.
The last cossies were on N96 where as the P1 was W00-51 plates (i think) plus it's a hard job trying to find a genuine Cossie in virginal condition. If you do it won't be cheap. I think the prices vary from about 8K for a dog upto about 15k for a decent one. Whereas you'll probably find the cheapest P1 is about 18K.
If price isn't in the equation for you then do as folk have already suggested, drive them both and make up your own mind. Just my opinion folks. Good luck.
Cheers

why not a compromise between the two? get an evo!
why? an evo6 looks the b0ll0cks imho, has decent build quality, up to date 4wd and gadgets, a relatively bomb proof engine thats good for modding (350bhp is easy, 400bhp on standard internals is getting more common), and plenty of specialists around should things go wrong or you want to mod it further. these days a 6 can be had from 16k upwards (so no more expensive than a good escort cosworth really but perhaps less than a p1)
i am NOT saying the evo is better than a p1 or a cossie, just saying imho, its a good compromise

TBH Mark you aren't getting a true reflection on what car would be best, there's bound to be biased replies because this, after all is a Subaru bb. Try asking the question on a neutral bb or a Ford related one and you will get totally different answers.

Maybe look at it from a different perspective?
I say cossie, not because I am a ford ***** niether:P
If you can find a decent cossie then running it for 6 months and putting a few thousand miles on it will not significantly affect it's value, you could then sell it on and buy somthing else without spending a fortune.
Ask yourself this, in five years time will I regret not buying a cossie when I could still get a good one?
