Fast Saab - what was it?

New 9-3 SS doesnt have wobbly steering or handling. EVO mag rated it infact.
One thing about Saab is they appreciate that torque is much more important in 90% of everyday driving than power.

My brother Grody's 9000 Aero modified by Abbot racing to just under 300bhp, does have torque steer, but actually handles very well. We had a run through Glencoe ( I was in the M3) amazed at the speed the abbot tweaked suspension let the 9000 could corner at. Although the M3 was a bit quicker off the mark and had more top end, the Saab is very quick with very good mid range and in gear acceleration which could catch the M3 out.
Also seems fast enough to give rally prepared scoobs a going
From Saab Central
"One of the highlights has to be Gordy's epic 'Scooby Bash'...
...We were driving in convoy from Ambleside to Keswick (not hanging about) when a fully sorted Scooby rally car (from the Malcolm Wilson Rally that was taking place nearby) came behind us and started to pick us off one by one.
When he finally came past me (I was at the front, already doing a very respectable speed ), it was on a huge uphill section where the road went double-width. He came shooting past, but with TonyO at full chat in close pursuit. Half a second later, Gordy goes past at warp factor 9 (Abbott 9000 Aero) on the outside of them both, and tucks in front of TonyO who had also now passed the scooby.
The noise from all three cars on full boost scared the bejesus out of me! (although I admit that I saw them coming and wound my window down to get the full 'audio' effect)
A superb bit of road, and a true Saab moment"
Good cars can be bought for reasonable money, take big mileages and are cheap to modify.

Was on the way to Tescos last night and as I turn out of our road (after picking the missus up on the way home from work) this Saab sits on my bumper. I stroll along at about 40 until we hit a roundabout leading down to dual carriageway. I floor it and pull a couple of lengths in 3rd, nothing in 4th and only a couple more in 5th but was doing 135mph at this stage (yeah I know it was stupid).
So from about 40/50 to 135 I pulled out about 3-4 car lengths tops. What the hell was this thing? A turbo version Im guessing. Was an old shape.
Im ashamed I took the bait and went that far as I was doing 135 just before I turned off at the next slip road which was a bit scary to say the least.
Simon.

Probably a 9000 or 900 Turbo of some description. Standard early 9000's can have up to 220BHP (Carlsson's) with the later Aero's at 225BHP. "Classic" 900 Turbo's top out at about 185BHP - but both are easy to tune, and I know of many at around 250BHP, some over 300BHP.
Do you know what reg year it was?
Standard 9000 2.3 Carlsson (my old one)
900 T16s:
900 Carlsson:
Certainly my old 9000 used to give a few people a surprise - mid range was excellent (50 - 70mph -n 5th circa 5.5 secs). Hopeless in the wet though with so much power going through the front wheels

The answer is quite simple:-
Scooby Impreza = 2 litre turbo 4 wheel drive,
Saab 900/9000 = 2 litre turbo 2 wheel drive,
Not difficult to work out that apart from a standing start there will be little in acceleration once traction is not a defining factor......
Pete.

Most modded UK road cars are less than 300BHP as the standard gearbox / clutch struggles to handle the power.

My father changed from a Volvo 850 R estate to a Saab 95 Aero (the newest style) and loves it! He claims it's not the power that drew him to the car but the driving position and comfort.......yeah dad that's why you'r always borrowing my evo......for the comfort i suppose!
Great cars imo. Saab's that is.......evo's aren't bad tho

I test-drove a 9-5 Aero when they came out a couple of years ago -- AWESOME mid-range. Anything above 40mph in 4th, just floor it and it flies, no need to change gear. The shove in 4th carries on to well over the ton, too
Definitely in the top 10 list of stealth cars, they'll be starting to get very affordable used, too ...

This is my SAAB 93 Turbo (185BHP) - can chew up CTR's no problem.
They handle like **** - even "sorted" ones so just go round a few bends or roundabouts to get rid of any SAAB..

I have an Abbott tuned new 9-3SS,and the car can take some surprising scalps 50-90,inc a bug eye on the A303 a coupla weeks ago.The new lpt 2.0t is a a simple remap away from another 45bhp,transforms the car tbh

What was the initial ref. to the fast Saab? Seems to be missing from the 1st post.
Anyway - I've got my Aero running sweetly and have finally stopped putting bits on it so thought I'd post it.
It's about 340-350bhp and 375ftlbs.(Maptun stage5+). Almost fully polybushed, big rear ARB with Abbott springs, Strut race and adjustable konis plus and LSD makes the car handle very well indeed (relatively). Understeer is all but gone and the LSD is a wonderful thing!
Ok - its my opinion but in the 50-105 sweet spot it's pretty damn thunderous. (to the point you feel the urge to laugh at the pace). I dont quite get full boost until 3rd but then it's off like a rocket.
Biggest problem is it's such a Q car that I never get a decent comparison
Anyway - this is it; Still looks/feels very fresh with 155k on the clock. Must fix that wiper!

I will echo the comments, mine is only a lowly LPT 9-3 but its quick for a grandad wagon and the handling is rubbish, I want Skinters to sell me his 9000 (depending on price, location and him deciding to sell it of course)

I got rid of my modded MY01 WRX with 292 BHP for a new 9-3ss Aero which has also now been modded and have not regreted it one bit.
I have all the grunt i need with all the added luxuries that dont come in a Scooby.
Saabs do suprises most people who believe them to be Old mans cars with no poke.

Clarkson said on Top Gear 'You never hear anyone say 'Look at that maniac in that Saab'' :P
he hasn't met you guys on the road!
Heh anyway, i've always liked em, for a rep mobile\mile muncher i'd pick a Saab over a 3 series or CLK methinks, just to be different! (and stupidly fast over 40-70)

i had a Saab 9-5
bought it off my father in law, he bought it brand new and before he even drove it he sent it to abbot racing for £6k worth of mods, it came out with adjustable suspension and 285 BHP, it was the first Saab 9-5 they had worked on, here is the pic of it when i had it
lovely cars , however no LSD, and GM build quality soon catches up with the mileage, at 150k miles it was smoking from the valve stem seals, needed a new box, heater controls and a few other bits and bobs,
the cars are full of cool little things though, cup holders funky wipers, heated seats etc
