My stepdaughter has just bought (with considerable encouragement from me) an '84 Mini 1000 & I reckon it is the most fun I've had on 4 wheels in a very long time, it is just a shame about the bone-jarring, eyeball rattling ride
Can anyone point me to a good mini forum?

I used to be into them big time, had about 5 of the blighters, my "best" being a 1430 Mini Sprite with approx 115bhp and geared for about 100mph. I could beat any of the hot hatch brigade up to about 80mph, then I ran out of gears

I* had loads of them, great fun, don't let her go too far with the modifying, I ended up finding out that the best 'fun' can be had with a near standard car! and, it doesn't owe you loads if you bend it!
Ron.
ps, I have a mate with a 1961 MK1 with 1380 and straight cut if anyones interested!!

My eldest son has a 1380 and it is a beast, the noise from the full through exhaust system is amazing, sadly he wants to sell it after a total rebuild from the ground up it's bright yellow so you see and hear him coming

I'm into them
Currently got two, both off the road at the mo. One got written off by some **** in a Corsa, t'other I had to take off the road 'coz I couldn't afford the insurance on my Saxo VTS and a cammed/head/s.c drops etc 1275 Mini at 18
The best modifications to do to a 998 Mini is a stage 1 kit and have it properly set up by a specialist who knows what they're doing ( ML Motorsport in Kent are one of the best for this...), it not only increases the performance, but makes it so much more drivable and more economical! (Make sure the standard discs and pads are in good working order before any performance increase, I presume it has 8.4" discs being an '84 model?). Next is some 12x5 alloys and some good quality 165/50/12 tyres. My personal favourite is anything with Yokohama written on the sidewall...A539s being the weapon of choice for wear rate/massive grip. Not many other mods have the impact those 3 do

James,
Beautiful motor mate, exactly how I intended my 1430 to look, but it got knicked before it was finished. Had Third Party Only insurance, too
I still consider buying another as a project, but I could easily spend as much money on a Mini as on the Scoob. KAD 16v head anyone?

Yeah, can be an expensive game alright. Engine and gearbox was about £2500 on that. Considering doing another one now. Probably A series powered but the appeal of a 16v vauxhall engine on webers is mighty.

I learned to drive in a mustard-yellow Clubman. Was great fun and very popular with the ladies . Seriously! It also held my full drum kit plus a guitarist with kit!
Then my Dad got a BRG 1.3i Cooper. Good fun, but he only kept it 6 months. It was something he had to get out of his system rather than a "keeper". I'd love to strip one out and mod it up to a proper track day beast. If only I had the time and the space to do it! One day...

I used to be into minis...til I drove a good car..
I loved it at the time, and I actually still have it after 10 years now.( well, my 4th actually, wrote 2 off, and teh other was a junker )
I drove it a few weeks ago, for the first time in months, it is so different to modern cars, but it just doesnt do it for me anymore.
Having said that....its just soooo funny when an impreza, or escort cosworth just dissappears in your rear view mirror
Turbochargers make almost any car good fun
To add....tuning the 998cc is really a waste of time, effort and money. Just go for a 1275. Even a std one from a breakers will be a lot better than a mildly tuned 998, and has far more potential.

used to have a clubman 1275 with mahoosive carlosfandango wide wheels and a tiny steering wheel (parking was murder).
Loved it to bits till i took a corner too fast in the wet and had a brief flying lesson which went quiet well except for the landing!!!
It nosed dived into a field and rolled several times ending up with a pointy roof every panel dented and a driver unhurt but attempting reguritate every expletive known to man and then some

Learnt to drive in one and then modd'd them to death.
A certain company in Surry took too much cash from me for engine work they did that all went horribly wrong. This taught me a lot about them though as I had to rebuild it myself. Not sure if this company is still going but I doubt it.
Pete Baldwin in Cambridge was excellent on the RR tuning side of things.

Matt, is that the red Z-Car one that was in Miniworld a few months ago? If it is, respect mate, the car sits gorgeous and I'd bet it rather shifts and sounds nice too! Any 0-60, 0-100 or 1/4 mile times?

Rich that certainly is the car. I think Matt does have some 0-60 times as it was in the 0-60 challenge earlier in the year. I couldn't tell you exactly what it was, but I it was certainly sub 4 seconds.
I'm sure Matt will post all the finer details up here soon, along with a comment of it being for sale if you are interested!

I bet it carries on pulling just as strong to about 100mph too?!
3.2, 'kin hell that's fast, especially as it's only 2wd! Although being RWD obviously has better traction than FWD. It's pretty subtle to look at too, do you drive it on the road much? Had any funny races against anything "fast"?

Very nice, but, realistically, it's not a 'Mini' any more is it, or maybe I'm missing something, in my book, a Mini must have an A series motor, no matter how tempremental they can be.

I'm with Ron on this one, although a KAD or Jack Knight 16V head would be nice
We are putting electronic ignition, maybe even Lumenition mappable on this one though, because I'm bu66ered if I'm banging my head on it's poxy little bonnet in the middle of winter trying to get the damned points dried out

BTW Rich & Mini the A539's are highly recommended, ours is on 175/50x13's & it corners like nothing I've ever driven this side of a go-kart
& that's with worn out rear shocks & a broken mounting bolt on one of the fronts methinks the sidewalls do more work than the suspension on a mini

Why you so against better, lighter, more powerful and more reliable different engines in Minis? The A-series is, er, shít
My red Mini had 165/60/12 Yoko A510s, which were great, my best mate then got A539s in 165/60/12 for his, and his was suddenly better than mine round roundabouts. It never used to be coz it had Falkens!
My black Mini had 175/50/13 Pirellis on 13x7s, and was awful. No grip at all, would wheelspin in 3rd in the wet with only 90bhp@flywheel!
Going to get either Yoko A539s or Toyo Proxes for my VTS soon, the Michelin ain't that great.
Would love to see the Mini in action sometime, when youi next going to be using it in anger?
