Question

Well, need to get a sensible car again for the 80 mile round trip to work.

Don't want to spend more than £9k and don't want anything too big, too old or too thirsty (would like a diesel). Prefer a 5 door for the dog.

Been thinking about:

* New Primera (my wife likes the shape - and the gadgets look good)
* New Megane (I like the shape!)
* Golf (3 years old for a decent one at that price and the seats are a bit uncomfy)
* Focus (hate the shape!)
* Octavia 1.9 diesel (but it's a taxi cab)
* Alfa 147 (do they do a 5 door?)
* Pug 307 (seen some bad write ups)
* Honda Civic (not the type r....)

I saw a 02 Megane 1.9 diesel with leather, etc with 10k on the clock for £8.5k but it had been sold by the time I checked it out.

Anything else I'm missing out? Any thoughts on the above?

Cheers
Richard.

p.s. probably means I'll be selling my 205 Mi16 in the near future if anyone is interested (based in Central Scotland).

i'll agree with you the Renault is the best looking, you might see your dealer a little more than you'd like with the Renault.

At least with it being new (ish) the warranty would cover most stuff - should things go bad.

Had a look round a pile of the cars today - Octavia (didn't think much off), Civic (pretty dull car inside - lots of space but no thank you), Primera (horrible dash and felt cheap), Pug 307 (very tight inside - not for me), so I'm back to the Megane (which I looked at again and think it fits the bill. Even the 1.6 does 40-50 mpg which suits).

David_Dickson - I'm probably looking for around £1,700 mark for the Mi16 (the car has new brakes all round, quick-shift, the 1.9 alloy Mi16 engine + Sony Mp3/CD player - brand new with remote).

ok, I am very intersted in the car, although im not so fussed about the stereo. Anyway, when are you looking to sell it?
Im not fussed if it wont be for a wee while yet, but Im willing to have a look at it whenever suits you.
If you arent going to sell it until you get your new car, then please get in touch nearer the time though.

Arnold Clark seem to be doing a good deal on the new Megane.

The 1.6vvt 5 door Dynamique (2nd top in range) with full leather is £13,500 on the road. But if you take their PCP package they take £2,100 off that price. As usual with PCP you get a guaranteed end value after 3 years (£4k) and the interest on the balance is only 6.9% (around £230 a month).

Never thought I'd buy a new car but this is pretty good!

David,

I'm probably looking to sell it anytime from next weekend.

The Mi16 engine had 80k miles on the clock when it was put in and I've only done around 1k miles in the past 4/5 months. I've never taken it on the track. It's Miami Blue and prior to the Mi16 being put in the previous 1.6 engine had done 92k miles. No rust anywhere (local pug dealer/garage that did the brake work said it was mint underneath). It's had a bump sometime in the past though as the paintwork has been redone. It's got a small dent on the driver door (50p size) and a slightly bigger dent on the bonnet near the front grill (hard to see).

Score wise I'd say:

* Mechanicals - 9/10
* Paint work - 7/10
* Interior - 8/10 (seats are pretty mint)

It's still got the 1.6 gearbox and has a quick shift. My new car (98% certain it's a new Megane) will have a fitted ICE, so looking to sell the 205 with the CD player in place.

It's not been lowered and no exterior modifications.

When I was looking for an Mi16 before they were all around £1.8k - £2k and in pretty bad nick. This is a nice example. It's got around 8 months MOT left (I think) but tax is due at the end of Sept. It costs me around £350 a year fully comp insurance.

What are you thinking of using it for? Road or track?

I'm based near Stirling.

Richard.

It would be for weekend use, occasional track-days and sprints at crail.

If the stereo comes with it, then fair enough, Im not bothered either way, just thought you might want to keep it for yourself.

I work all week days, and the next 2 weekends I have other commitments, but any time after then, I can come and see it.
I am seriously intersted in it, and unless you are in a huge hurry to sell it before I can come and see it, then I would like first refusal on it, if thats ok.

David

Yep - not a problem. I'm away for a couple weeks on holiday from the 10th Sept (back on the 20th).

Meant to add above that I also got a 309 front end put on at the same time which gives longer bottom arms + shafts (and hence slightly more negative camber), and a stiffer anti-roll bar, and it also gives 1.9 hubs + brakes.

btw - here's some pics of the engine bay after the conversion.

An interior shot

Looks good from those pics!

My regular e-mail is david-m-d@lineone.net
The hotmail address I only use occasionally as scoobynet wont recognise my main address.

I will get in touch with you in a couple of weeks time and arrange a viewing,

Thanks,
Dave.

Here's a couple external pics.

Looks mint in the pictures but the paintwork is only a 7 out of 10 up close. Still nice though

edited to add that the 1.6 alloys are 'ok' - not in the best of nick. I was going to swap them for some mint 1.9 alloys my mate had (around £250) but since I wanted the car for weekend and track days I didn't feel it was worth it.

lol

At least with the 5* NCAP rating you'd walk away from it.
