If this is the LAD conversion I'd take that power figure with a large pinch of salt...

If it is the LAD conversion,then IMHO steer well clear. People have put them on the rollers & power has actually been down!
TO attain 185-190BHP in a Clio 172/Cup, you would have to have a full exhaust, filter, remap and for more power would cost mucho money
The engine is in a state of high tune as norm, and a non turbo engine is not as good value for money regards £/bhp mods.

Superchips do a remap for around £300. They plug a computer into the interface behind the front ashtray. Increase of around 10BHP and 10lbs Torque.

Personally I have been ripped off so many times by various tuners that I wouldn't dream of going to LAD, and I concur with the others on that one.
Best way forward would in my humble opinion be to leave the powertrain alone and get a straight cut dog box fitted. The gear box is so rank it would probably shave a couple of seconds off the 0-100 time. Sometimes I miss the Caterham...

take a read of this months ccc magazine, they were testing various tuned cars....lad's clio cup was supposed to be pushing out 200bhp when they time it it was slower 0-60 than std

Isnt there an R Sport ecu upgrade you can get from renault sport?
tbh as mentioned the engine is in a high state of tuen as is, to get noticible power youre gonna be talking Tb's or expensive kit, new exhaust manifolds etc.
I went to look at one today, tempted by the Clio Cup with air con now, unless I can get someone to make some DTH throttle bodies cheapish for my 19 to tide me over a bit longer.

It's not that difficult to get more performance out of one...
For a Cup just get a Viper or BMC enclosed induction kit (~£250), an R-Sport ECU (£235), a full SS zorst (~£300) and a de-cat (~£100), as a guy I know has this done and it's pushing 198bhp & 164lb/ft, from only a few hundred quids worth of mods.
Not bad for "bolt on" mods!

Most likely very expensive alternative is throttle bodies done by Technomap or something similar. That'll push it to 200-220bhp. Theres a movie clip floating around which shows a Clio MK1 172 with this modification, and it is bloody fast!!!

I've superchipped my Cup; don't know about the affect on BHP, but torque is definately improved. Had it rolling roaded a couple of weeks ago in 91 degrees air temp, and it pushed out 167bhp and 154lbft; temp affects both quite significantly (I'm lead to believe) so the fact that even in 91F it gave 154lbft is remarkable when standard output is 147lbft. If the high temp reduced output by say 5% then power would be in the upper 170's and torque in low 160's.
Not bad for £293 inc fitting and VAT. Oh, and it's reversible too for £50 each time you "flash" the ECU with either standard or superchip maps.

Oh, and remember that the Cup only weighs 1011kg, which is why it always comes off best against all of VAG group 1.8T powered cars which weigh c1400kgs, even the 225bhp ones....

Who fits the R-sport ECU?
Simply un-plug & remove the standard ECU, then fit the new one!
It's very easy, you can swap them over whenever you want and they're only £199 +VAT

I'm confused
Is R-Sport actually Renault Sport, or some other third party? ie is it an approved Reanult part or some third parties idea of how to remap the engine. Is it a warranty invalidator?
I guess I could phone the number, but I want to know who I am talking to!

It is not Renault Sport, but this is a Renault approved mod apparently...
They are the UK based company that's meant to be supplying the tuning parts for the Cup (& 172), as there is stuff like cages, seats, etc, mentioned in the Cup brochure.

Thanks Rich for the details.
My cups done 6k miles and has loosened up well: it is really very fast indeed, seems better than 172 BHP could deliver so i 'd be interested in how it would go with the competition ECU. I d hope it would eliminate the flat spot at about 3000rpm for a start.
How's fuel economy with the new ECU?

Mine became noticeably quicker after 5k miles and just seems to get better and better.
As for the flat spot - it's not something you'd really notice but I reckon the pull could be improved around there which is what the ECU sounds it does if it boosts torque and spread.

Yes I did consider the r-sport ECU, but I got conflicting info about their warranty status: one minute it was renault approved, the next (ie when I rang R-Sport in wimbledon) it wasn't. Superchips provide a 12 month warranty, and because it's a remap it's an easy thing to undo and redo. Oh, and I didn't feel comfortable fitting the r-sport ECU myself (incompetent twit at the best of times) so I would have paid more than the £199 plus VAT once I'd paid for fitting. Just playing it safe I guess....
