Question

Looking to buy a new car for 10k-12k but i dont have a clue what to buy. The only idea I have come up with is the Seat Leon.
Is it worth buying a brand new car or not? I believe you loose £1k as soon as you sign the dotted line, or should i buy a one year old car instead?

Don't buy brand new if losing money is an issue for you.

Head over to www.seatcupra.net/forums to ask about Leons.

Depends what you want out of a car..........

if pure driving thrills and outright peformance is your top priority like me, even with 10-12K, you shouldn't be buying new. Take it from me, you'll get so much more for your money with a car a few years old........I'm a used fleet car seller for a major leasing company at the end of their contracts, I see how much cars lose on depreciation and there's no chance I would buy new. In a lot of cases your throwing away thousands and thousands. So you can squeeze to nice Sti's, possibly an Evo 4 or 5RS, Porshe, M3 or even an R32 Skyline, or something else, you get the picture.

But, on the other hand, if driving around in the very latest shape car with the latest shape plate, with manufaturer back up and warranty is important to you (?) then buy new, somone has to do it I surpose. Something like a Clio Cup will be great for that money, all other cars are no where near its performance with that dosh, but you'll still gonna lose loads on it, could get a second hand one cheaper, and could of had a much faster car with your money.

The only new within reason car you can buy at the moment, where money loss will not be great, are sort-after cars like Cooper S's or CTR's, but they are above your £12k, and you'll need to keep them for a very short period.

Some very good points there.

I would like something with a LITTLE kick but i cant bring myself round to spending 10k-12k on a 3 to 4 year old car. I was thinking about buying a MY99 Turbo buy I just couldnt spend that kind of money on a 4 year old car.
I need some thing that will give me trouble free motoring so a new or one year old car will do the job.

Ray

CTR- Is that a Civic Type R?

I can recommend the Clio Cup, you will get one brand new for that money, and they are great fun little cars.

Ray_li,

you say
i cant bring myself round to spending 10k-12k on a 3 to 4 year old car. I was thinking about buying a MY99 Turbo buy I just couldnt spend that kind of money on a 4 year old car
You forget that the MY99 that you refer to cost £20k ish new, plus any extras (PPP etc) so £10k is not as dear as you think.
Its a lot of car for the money, so what would you expect to pay for it?

If you want a new car for £10-£12k, I really can't see anything that comes close to the Clio Cup for value for money and sheer thrills!

Thats why I bought one for when I want a change from the Scoob!

Clio Cup is a good buy for that money if you can live with its size and basic makeup.

Leon is a very good car which will be bigger and more relaxed to drive.

You cant get a New CTR for £12k although they are massive inside.

RS was a good recommendation, very good car with size on its side. (not sure how much they are new)

Ford Focus Zetec is a decent enough car too.

Figure out what you want from a car and then pick the one that comes the closest.... might not be about performance???

..... Ray reference your buy new question....

I wouldn't buy new again unless I was rich! I bought my current car which was 6 months old with 2,300 miles on the clock.
It was perfect - like new and it saved me £2,200.

Throwing money away is something I can't afford to do.... so I didn't buy new.

Most reviews don't rate the MG ZR 160 very highly....

Quite bland and nowhere near as fast as it should be with those horses on tap.

Residuals are amongst the worst also....

Owned both a Focus Zetec 1.8 and a Seat Leon Cupra. Never again on both counts. Both very unreliable, and whilst the Focus is an excellent handling car, the Leon was dreadful, almost to the point of being dangerous on anything other than a very smooth surface. Bounce! Bounce! Bounce!

Oh, and the Seat branch the Leon ended up at (supplying dealer), took 8 months to sell it. It was sold for £4K less than their Subaru branch gave me for it, and £5.5K less than they originally had it up at! Scary depreciation...

Cheers

13k can just about get you a used facelifted 2003 model year Leon Cupra which is a nice motor despite what toonman says
Also they don't handle that bad, well the one I drove didn't.
Wait a while and they will be down to around 12k, maybe not as much fun as a Clio Cup but a lot more car for your money. This model grips better as it has bigger wheels with 225 rubber. And with a 215bhp chip it will go well...
Still over 2 years warranty to cover any gremlins.

Buying new you'll lose 17.5% VAT and dealer margin which is anywhere between a claimed 5% - 15% depending on Franchise, etc £1k is so far off the mark unfortunetly.

Buy a used or demo vehicle and let someone else take the first hit

"a nice motor despite what toonman says"

Mine fell to bits over 9 months and had all the usual Leon problems as standard - leaks, rattles, stone chipped paintwork, faiing coils etc etc. Oh, and it needed a new gearbox. Sold it at 12063 miles.

As for the handling; the spring rates are too high and the dampers too soft. Pressing on over a typical British road, it winds itself up and bounces everywhere. A series of switchbacks taken at speed, can see the car almost out of countrol at the end.
The serious drivers in www.seatcupra.net feel the same way. It has got plenty of grip, but that's not the same as handling.

The new model with 17" wheels was tested by What Car and they weren't impressed with the handling. It came last in the test.

Whatever you buy is no skin off my nose though. Just telling you about my experiences.

AS for the Leon Im gonna go for a test drive Friday and Im gonna keep all the points in mind that Toonman1 pointed out. If one thing does ot go well on this test drive no matter how small Im gonna walk.

One of my bosses has a brand new Leon Cupra (180bhp) and he thinks its the greatest thing since sliced bread, so each to their own I suppose, you might well love it!

Good luck.
