Question

Yesterday coming from the A602 onto the A10, err I mean onto a private road at an undisclosed location, I had one of these up my *rse. I gave it full tilt in a 4th and 5th and couldn't make any real gound away from this guy. I pulled over as I wasn't that keen on his promimity to my bumper at those speeds.... I must admit I was surprised that I couldn't gain on him. My car is a standard STi7; his car looked standard too.

Here we go again

Fiat coupe 20v turbo:

0-60 in 6.7s
0-100 in 14.5s

giving a 60-100 time of 7.8s which is about the same if not better than your STI

Sheep in.....

that would explain it then, SB. I seem to remember that they have about 220 bhp in standard trim, so about 40 bhp less than my car, but I suppose they are lighter, and do not have the infamous *4WD transmission losses*

LOL @ Tiggs

The shape of them is also very important - very little drag relatively speaking.

drag coefficent of 0.29 I think very very low.
I am sure that Mycroft would have exact technical specifications and opinions!!!!

Quick cars but get it on a nice twisty road and you'd eat it for breakfast (even more so if it was wet)- The girlfriend has one and I get to drive it quite a bit, nice cars to drive, loads of feedback but they just don't handle like a scoob.

On the straight A/B roads a standard 20vt Fiat coupe is similar to an sti-Scooby.
30-70 very fast indeed.

The Fiat is a slippery shape and 'only' front wheel drive means more power to the wheels.

"The best thing about the fiat threads is that everytime they draw out a new coupe owner on to scoobynet Welcome friend "

and some regulars!

i think 30 - 70 is 5.2ish, which does feel fast in my standard one, i do think tho if you get in 2nd, at 40mph, turbo seems to be on full bore at that point, it really shifts well at that speed, then onto 70, then you need 3rd gear after that, which takes you upto 110, and by then its game over.

they make a great noise aswell.

How reliable (or not) are they?

I know about the infamous cam belt change, but generally are they pretty reliable?

ive not any major probs so far, just the cambelt change and a cracked manfold, been welded, have see how long that lasts.

no major issue's, just the cambelt and cracked manfold are the famous 2.

the power/noise/good looking car, out weights these probs above

Thanks Dave

My girlfriend is looking for one but I wasn't sure if they were reliable or not. I know that FIAT didn't have a good reputation a few years ago but by the sound of it they've sorted themselves out.

you allways get 1 or 2 pigs with any car brand, just dont forget the fiat coupe was not built by fiat, built by some more respected hands.

No getting away from the fact these are a very fast car. Totally different kettle of fish than an Impreza. I regularly have a little sprint with one that does my commute to work. The midrange on these cars is where they will toast an Impreza. In fact from 100MPh they will pull away.
It's quite funny watching them trying to give it some stick from rest when it's wet though.
I was going to buy one but was put off by all cambelt scare stories- these days you can get it done for half the Fiat dealer price.

The FIAT badge would not put me off...great cars, and so cheap these days that I would consider getting one...

Future classic?

Hi guys, just thought I would add my shovel full, correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the STi a factory modified wrx ? that being the case then making a comparison between it and a standard Coupe isn't quite fair, you mention that the STi would have coupe on the twisties, well I have a lightly modified coupe and it does corner quite well...just food for thought.

Nice forum BTW

Unlucky maybe? SHould be solid if you shop around.
One aspect of performance rarely mentioned is the acceleration >100. Even in 5th, floored at a tonne gives a firm shove in the back (on an airstrip of course)

I don't think its a particularly valid argument to bring 100+mph acceleration into this! For a start its VERY illegal on British roads, seldom matter and most importantly NOT what scoobys are about! If you get your kicks from that high end punch you'd buy a supra anyway which would destroy the Fiat. The coupe turbo is a cracking car with strong motorway and a-road performance but its not the same sort of car as the scooby...they just can't be compared
