Bobby,I have had my year old 330d Touring Sport for 3 months now.
Its the best all round car ever IMHO,36 mpg around town,47 on a run.
0-60 as quick as a Capri Injection
390NM of torque.
3100 revs when you doing 100mph(private road)
Great handling and looks.
18" alloys
M tec body kit.
Yes its not as quick as my old STi but you can still blat it about and motoway driving is a dream.
As said before its not as quick as the 3 litre petrol but who cares when you can get 600 miles on a full tank.
£750 full comp in London,me 34 the wife 29.

Sold the Alpina and am torn between these two. Sold the Alpina 'cos of the £2500 insurance and 18mpg. Both would offer the same insurance (under £1000) althogh the diesel would return better MPG, not that much though as would only get an Auto.
What would you go for??

I hate to say this but the diesel will hold its value better and probably work out cheaper to run despite diesel being a rip of fin the UK.
A diesel.
Yuck.
Still it's meant to be one of the best.

The new 330d is now more powerful and more torquey, and would be my choice. As you say there won't be much to choose on the economy, I know the 330i can get close to 30mpg, where as the 330d can fall to 30mpg or below for some owners due to the auto gearbox. Its a funny thing but the auto has little or no effect on the economy of the 330i but ruins it on the 330d, just have a look at the CO2 figures, 177gms/km (man) vs 206gms/km (auto).
In the end 204bhp and 410nm of the new 330d would still win me over.

If the options to you are auto only for the diesel and choice of manual for the petrol then that's the decider IMO - the petrol it has to be.
I'd be inclined towards the petrol anyway but realise the diesel has its advantages but that auto box is horrid, the 3 series has a nice manual box and the auto version just ain't comparable. Even in tiptronic mode you feel totally unconnected with the car, I've never like autos so maybe you won't find it as bad but you should definitely try one for at least a day to find out if you can live with it - I know I couldn't.

Have to say that having had a standard 330ci previously, the Sport model is a way better car, handling far more taut and nimble, steering better, far more confidence inspiring, I am truly suprised by the difference.

Nice
The 330Cd will be even better than the 330d saloon cos it gets the uprated engine with more power and torque. Can't remember what the figures are though.

I'm deffinatly tempted by the 330cd I will have to have a look into things a lot more closely I think!
I am assuming this new engine is the same that can be found in the current 530d BMW's.
I tihnk no matter how tempting the 330ci would be for me, the idea of the car that looks the same has bags of torque and still gets fuel economy cant be bad at all!

Erm...
I have had a 330iSE for a couple of months now and I don't like it (fortunately I can give it back soon and didn't pay any money for it)!
I haven't been so dissappointed in a car since the bug eye... Where do I start -
Interior - Its not a real 4 seater car there is less room in the back than my (2+2) Skyline. I often carry passengers in the back of the 'line who don't complain - they do in the 330. The front seats are crap too - far too flat! On the upside I think the controls are logical and its well built... Overall though even with the leather the car doesn't feel at all special (but I guess its not meant too), oh and why is the standard SE devoid of CD player
Chassis - The single biggest dissappointment. It is not smooth on any roads, great I thought at first - it must be sporty then - nope! Chronic roll round corners (following a friend in a Citroen ZX diesel, it appeared that the 3 series rolled more), steering has feel but is slow. Maybe the sports suspension would be better?
Engine - Smooth and linear, probably a great cruising engine in a 530 estate or similar. Quite loud for a stock engine...
In short this is not a package for me.
I think that most medium hatches have more room in the back (focus/307 certainly do!) so I find it unbelieveable... Still the diesel gives good MPG for the performance just seems like the 3 series package is an overpriced failure for anyone with family or friends to move in the car (still most of world disagree with me on this)...
And the missus complains much much more about me driving the 330 fast than she does the (aftermarket suspension/loud) Skyline!
I'm going to try an S4/M5 in the near future I think...

I guessed that might be the case... Just I expected that suspension this soft might ride well - it doesnt!
Still can't get over the lack space though
(and I didn't even mention the image)
Oh but the best bit has got to be the key fob operated windows - who needs doors now The look on random people's face as four people get out of the car using only the windows!!!!!!!!

Nice cars but they are a victim of their own success, so common nowadays, bit of a predicatable choice for M and S shoppers but so good you cant ignore them, must admit I would be torn between getting one and putting up with the 'image' and enjoying the car or getting something inferior but more imaginative.
