a colleague of mine shat himself up in his Honda S2000 convertible last weekend and has decided that he no longer has the confidence to drive the car quickly so is looking to p/x against a TT 225 Cab

is the TT difficult to 'lose'? he reckons he has had enough of RWD and wants the security of 4WD

Yup, he'll be perfectly at home in the *safe* (read *dull*) TT if he hasn't got the ability to drive an S2000 properly.

As long as its not one of the early ones thats escaped the recall mods.

to be honest I'd rate him a pretty good driver and been out in the car with him before and he seemed quite confident in driving quickly but he seems scared of the car?

To be honest I cant understand why they are supposed to be tail happy as not torquey like the M3 and got quite wide tyres on the back

the TT is actually more FWD with AWD when you need it & it's got electronic gizmos to further extract the driver . Probably pretty safe but boring.

A driving course to teach him how to drive powerful RWD cars would be my advice.

But if he's not that interested in driving then the TT would probably suit him better.

CC - why not? Apart from improving his driving skills, he'll have a great time.

I think he is using his 'moment' as an excuse to get rid because he is also considering a Boxster which is likely to be just as much of a challenge as the Honda 2000 since it's RWD and also the added bonus of mid-engined?

I suggest the TT over the Boxster as you can chip them easily when/if he gets bored

i read a review of the 3.2 v6 one with the new clutchless dsg box (or whatever it's called) and they said it's a great box but it makes the already dull tt even duller. the 2 cars are so different it's unbelievable, the s2000 is quicker and more exciting the tt is a lot slower and safer to drive fast.

I read a review a while back TT 3.2 dsg / new nissan / Boxter

The TT came out top......strange

Just because something has better grip - why should it be boring
chip it and you have a 270 bhp car with 280 lbs of torque
whack Jabba's kit on it for £3000 and you have a 350 bhp motor that will wipe the smile off of many other car owners that assume they have a much faster car...

If he keeps the Honda, he could put racelogic's variable slip traction control on it - cost about £800
should cure those scary moments

Test Drove a TT 225 Cab today as thats one of the options we are looking at to replace the tired A. It was very smooth, and pulled well in all gears, even 6th. Nailing the throttle round a damp roundabout at 40 just silently and gently put the ESP into action, and we got right round the circle, then it just launched up the dual carriageway. Very predictable, very safe and fairly quick.

The Salesman wouldnt let me turn off the ESP...

Cheers,
Grant

Why on earth not! I'd have told the saleman to stick the car up his backside if he wasn't gonna let me check/test the whole car. Mind you, he probably doesn't realise that there are actually people out there who can drive cars WITHOUT all the electric gizmos

my mate was in the same situation, deciding to buy a TT or not, in the end he went for the 1.8T A4 Cab, glad he did, you see to mant TT's on the road and not a lot of A4 cabs plus there more practical.

I did an Activity day at North Weald yesterday with 25 Elise, S2000, Scoob, S2000, and S14, as you can imagine conditions yesterday were horrendous espeacily for RWD, managed to go as fast as the Scoob round the high speed bend pah better car when it rains .

Ok my point is I learnt loads about handling a RWD car yesterday by gooning around with a little tutition and feel far safer, suggest to your mate he does a wet handling day. I spun out loads, and managed to get my Elsie to drift which was sooo cool, and I feel so much happier driving my car than before.

The chap yesterday managed to keep his S2000 from spinning most of the day, which is credit to the driver as the straight bit of road we had to drive was so slippery people were spinning off

Rarely is the car to blame, 99% it is driver error and lack of experience.

If that's the case then his logic is suspect ..... when the pendulous ones let go, they really do. Your "challenge" comment is spot on! .... only moreso ...

I have a Boxster and can definitely say that it is a much better drivers car than the TT. The TT is quick, safe, well built, pretty and anything else you care to mention, but on any road, the Boxster is a more enjoyable car to push hard.

Any mid engine car will be trouble when it lets go. The thing with a Boxster is that it is so communicative and well balanced that you get a lot of feedback as to when you are getting near the limits. The S2000 I understand (as I have never driven one) is reputedly very edgy on the limit and can snap with little warning.

Also, the Boxster is not likely to bite you unless you are really going for it. The S2000 is more likely to catch you out well before you are really tanking on - well that's what I've read anyway.
