I'm having my regular "This car is too expensive to run" panic and thinking of changing my Scoob to something more suited to my 100 mile a day commute. I have a about £10,000 to spend and was thinking of getting a high mileage BMW 530D or Audi A4 Avant 2.5TDi as I want something with a bit of poke but good MPG.

Any opinions?

BTW, my Scoob has 70,000 miles on it, so is no spring chicken

Seriously, would anyone consider blowing £10k on a quality car with full history but with 100,000+ miles under it's belt?

I'd get a lower miles Pug306 TD for half the money. Whichever way both cars are going to be worth peanuts when you come to sell.

test drove an A4 2.5TDI quattro and was pretty impressed.
quite chippable if you 'need' more power as well.

no experience of the 530D, but I know two people with 330d and they are both very happy with them.

what about a 2000+ reg passat tdi (red DI) they look kinda nice - can take high mileage and under 10k

For that money I'd get a 6 month old less than 6k Octavia TDI Laurent and Klement. All the toys you could want, good MPG, its basically a rebodied VW, half way between an A4 and A6 in size. Cheap to run and if my RS is anything to go by (20 months old, 102,000 miles and no problems at all ) I'd say you can't go wrong. Oh and it'll still have its 3 year warranty just in case.

You'll struggle to get a 530d for £10k, the only one I could find was a green one with green leather and 145k miles.

just bought a TDCI Laguna sport for the same reason, W reg full Shistory all the bits , £3K ! so might even keep the scoob now....
