Sunday Ponder........MR2 mk1
#1
I was just doing a bit of surfing while getting rid of my regular Sunday hangover when I stumbled across an MR2 mk1 for sale near my luxury apartment. Now I know they suffer rust around the arches, but apart from that all I know is they handle awesomely!
From what I can gather they weigh about 975kg and have about 120bhp (apparantly they do a supercharged one too). Get a couple of light bucket seats, remove some interior trim, fit some R rated tyres......and you have yourself a decent track car.........or not.

They do handle very well in the dry, but they can catch you out in the wet. A mate of mine had one, he managed to crash it twice in 3 years, and he was a steady driver. Mind you, he still recons it was the best car he ever owned.

Supercharged version is about 145 stock, but easily increased. Good examples hard to find, but worth it if you do find one! near elise handling, and a wicked high reving engine to boot!

Still the best car I've ever driven, and that even includes loads of the latest stuff. Careful though, plenty lemons out there now after 15 years hard use and they don't drive anything like the good ones.

Lovely, was selling a Renault 5 1.7 GTX years ago and these two ***** came arounf to look at it, they turned up in a mint MK1 MR2 and the driver was the mate who knew about cars so he drove and really thought he was a driver of some repute, considering he had never driven the car, he was three up and it was resedential he got to 70 in a 30, total **** and scared me witless and wasnt even that skilled, got back and kept my cool anticipating a sale but he just decided he wanted to chat about cars, half an hour elapsed and I was bored so I asked him about his mr2 and could I have a look, he gived me the keys to have a look so I get in adjust the seat start it up, he looks worried (this thing was like knew,
immaculate, really pampered)
So I launch it doen the road, full bore smoking take off, no mean feat in a 1.6 mid engined car with such traction, I then take it out for a good 15 minutes and screw the **** off it, took it back reeking of hot clutch, brakes and burnt rubber, it felt noticeablry looser when I had finished but what handling, nice engine even allowing for it being flat below 4k.
He tried to get uppity with me but being a foot taller and the fact he had caned my car and I was having none of it put him off, little fat turd, sent him on his way with no sale but a nice memory of a top little car!

Yeah, not too bad. Although on the way back from Fortnum and Mason's yesterday the strap on my Patek Philippe broke, so i'm off to Tiffany's at lunchtime to get it fixed. Any idea if my 360 Modena would be safe down there while i'm having it done?

I could get one of my chauffeurs to pick you up if you like. I need to get some jewels picked up from De Beers and a painting from Agnews.
Anyway about this MR2

I read this post on the HU display of my helicopter as I flew back from the Playboy party in St Tropez.... ILMOIR great stuff!
I had an 87 Mk1 about 8 years ago. I bought it off a BA pilot and it was like new. The very last of the old shape and an absolute hoot to drive. Great to drive in the dry - lots of poke, great noise, lovely driving position and lots of dials!! However, the part worn rear tyres in the wet were more than my fledgling driving skills could take and I spun three times and scared myself witless each time.
I have had some pokey rear drivers since then and now I think if you know what you're doing they are not that bad. Just know where the limits are and they make a very rewarding driving tool.
Oh, boring I know but in 70k miles nothing went wrong. It's a Toyota after all.
