Gold TDi 150......anyone modded?
#1
Has anyone on here modified a Golf GT TDi (the 150 bhp variety?) I have seen an ad in Autocar for a tuning company claiming 170+ bhp for the 130 bhp version.
Just wondered how good they were and how easy to remove (for warranty etc)
Cheers,
Darren.
PS - post should read Golf of course !!!!!

IIRC it is either Jabba or Revo who do a conversion for the GT TDi 130 that takes it up to around 180-185bhp and over 300lb/ft... I would imagine that the 150 is able to go beyond the 200bhp mak, because it has a different turbo and internal parts, its a stronger engine, I'm sure I read that on the MKIV Forums.
Saxo Boy from edinburgh was looking to get a ride in a Revo'd TDi 150 up at Knockhill but dont know if he ever managed it...

Grant

I met up with the guy but it was too busy to go for a run
REVO can remap the PD150 to about 200bhp and 300lbft which I'd imagine feels pretty useful on the road The best thing about REVO is that its a reflash of the original ECU and you can buy a switcher that allows you to switch between stock and performance mode so its completely warranty safe, etc Even in performance mode you'd only know its there because of the extra thump when you drive it REVO ain't cheap (£500 for the remap and £150) for the switcher (you don't need the switcher but I'd have it) but its well regarded

For £650 I think thats pretty good for a car which is going to be more than useful on the road, Mmmmmmmmm 300ft/lb!!
I have the opportunity of buying a 130TDi so would be more than happy to get it Revo'd... The thought of 50mpg is very tempting!!

The problem I have is its like getting blood out of stone trying to get a straight answer on the performance that the REVO'd 130 & 150 give I heard somewhere that a REVO'd 130 did the 1/4m in 14.8s which is about as quick as a Clio Cup/CTR I haven't been able to confirm this at all though

I have a Revo'd Audi S3 and it is amazing with torque and BHP at around the 270 mark.
The 130 bhp golf should hit 190 bhp after the Revo treatment and 200 bhp for the 150 version.
They also operate a try-before-you-buy policy, where they programme the re-map to last for an hour.
Well worth the money IMHO and totally undetectable to VAG.

Only the 1.8T ECU has the 5 hour remap facility. The TDI's don't have sufficient ECU memory If you talk nice most places would REVO your car on the understanding that if you are not satisfied a day later they would undo it and give you your money back

The Revo set up does not exceed 'safe limits' as laid down by VAG.
If you can't get the free trial on the TDi best option is to go for a blast with technician as Revo could be funny with # of burn units used etc.

The VAG 6 speed box is good for 360nm not lb/ft so about 260lb/ft is really the safe ish maximum. Not heard of any blowing up though and a couple of 130tdi Ibiza's on Cupranet are running 180hp & 300lb/ft...

My mates just bought the 150 model. when looking for it he was in a vw showroom and asked how much of a difference there was between the 150 and the 130. The salesman said something like "if you're looking to modify it, the 130 is capable of more than the 150". sounds strange but there must be something in it for a car salesman to put forward a cheaper alternative...

The 150 can be modified to give more than the 130....but..in terms of % improvement the 130 offers more.
standard 130 revo'd gives 180-90bhp
standard 150 revo'd give 195-205bhp

150 has stronger rods and bigger IC - everything else is pretty much the same. I think the dealer was talking £££ per BHP - I'd have the 150 - oh - in fact I did

From Evo:
The hike from the previous model's 130bhp to 150bhp, and from 228 to 235lb ft is down to three main factors – a bigger boost from the variable-vane turbo, a more efficient intercooler and a better design of injector nozzle which results in a more efficient mixture burn.

I had a quick look at the options
1, Revo - remap the chip and have a switch option to switch between standard and performance settings (approx £650 + VAT for the two)
2, DMS - separate unit that works "with" the original ecu and can react/learn driving stytle, I have not yet found out what this option costs or how easy it is to remove/switch off, but it looks to give similar results
Cheers,
Darren.
From DMS web site (www.turbodiesel.uk.com/dmssystem.htm):
"The DMS System is a secondary computer that works along side the cars ECU, it is capable of learning the drivers style of driving, whilst also adapting to the environment, e.g. razor sharp throttle response is great for a sporting drive down a fast road, but if sitting in heavy traffic it can make it difficult to keep smooth progress. The processor continuously calculates all of the inputs to subtly adjust the characteristics to suit the situation."

OK, a bit more research and one of them is fitted!
I later found out that the DMS system is not as I described previously (the separate ECU) but is in fact the same as the Revo system (i.e. the ECU is re-flashed through the OBD port).
Anyway, the Revo costs £499 + VAT (the DMS is about £100 more) and the guys that do the work are only 3/4 hour away.....so guess where I was this lunchtime!
The whole operation took about 30-45 minutes.
It was difficult to really test the new performance in the monsoon like conditions on the way back but I will post an update in a few days.....assuming it stops raining.....torque is a wonderfull thing when the roads are dry
Cheers,
Darren.
PS - another reason that I went for it was that the insurance company didn't want any additional premium!!!!! (Liverpool Victoria, Frizzell)
