Saab 900 Turbo?
#1
Saw a green saab with twin pipes each side at the back and thought I may as well go and see what he was made of, pulled away from him pretty slowly so he obviously did have a turbo, did they make a saab 900 turbo or is this a conversion job?
I had a quick chat with him at the lights and he said he had a td04 and 310hp, i instantly thought that was a bit high since i'd just left him with only 270hp (PE) in my car AND 4wd, anyway, he said he was running 1.5 bar so he was surprised to hear i was only using 1.2 bar He also said he had trouble putting it down on the road and thats why I left him (2wd he said), strange thing was that I only actually left him once my car was into its stride and he had a 4x4 sticker on the back anyway!!!
Anyway, wondered if anyone knew anything about this car or ones like it, it did go well but I think his 310hp and 2wd argument for losing means he probably doesnt have 310hp! And 1.5 bar seems quite a lot, does it really require that much boost to get a saab engine motoring?
As always, i'm not showing off nor putting his car down, i'm intrigued as to what, how, where, how much and some opinions, also how much do those things weigh?

Saab 900 - yes, turbo.
Depending on whether it was a modern shape 900, or an old shape. - old shapes had a real old fashioned nothing, then bang, large turbo (Garrett of some description), entertaining handling.
Never have done a 4wd - it's front drive, without lsd until modified, so 300bhp to the road - BIG problem.
later gen 900's may have used a td04. They're generally looked down on by saab'ers.
later smaller turbo ones make masses of torque - I've a 9-5 light pressure (ecopower), that's only got 150bhp, but makes more torque at 1800 than the scoob does at 4k. That's a real wheelspinner even on 215's.
Still not sure if his 310 is likely - if that interested, do a search for abbott racing - they do serious saab tuning..
- Mark.
