Woohoo my first classic car....

Hi dosenöffner,
Totally agree the Alpine is a great car but horses for courses really.
In any case you have to be a bit mad or a masochist to run a Tiger on standard brakes bearing in mind they are also shared with the Hillman Husky . I run four pots with vented disks etc.,..
Ultimately if power is your thing (and it is mine) there is no comparison between the two. As I am sure you know as a Mk2 my car has the 289 block as standard. My car (which is tuned) easily runs 350bhb and 400 lb/ft
and combined with the fact it is Orchid Green and looks VERY standard from the outside makes it one of the ultimate classic Q-Cars. It has done timed 0-60 runs between 3.4 and 3.9 seconds as pointless in many ways as that statistic is! It is also a very handy track car as Classic & Sportscar and anyone who does MSA Classic events will testify and my father and I won the MSA Classic Challenge in it earlier this year - not a great claim to fame I admit but we were pretty chuffed with it none the less
As I said I love the Alpine, but for me it has to be and will always be a Tiger that has my heart.
Kind regards
Robin

does an RB5 count? No, I guess not. Until a couple of years ago I had a Mk1 RS2000. I stupidly sold it and now I want another one and am going to have to pay about £4k more than I got for mine.
What state is your 'tina in?

Steve,
A Mk1 RS heh? Yep bet your kicking yourself for selling that, very nice motors. I nearly bought a MK2 RS2 but was really after a pre-73 tax exempt motor. The 'tina is in average condition but I got it for an absolute song, just sailed through its MOT so not too bad at all, hasnt got a twin choke weber on it like it should have but I'll soon sort that. Well pleased anyway.
Next on the list I think is a hillman imp, one of the chamois coupe ones if I can get a bargain on one.

I have an AE86, that deserves to be a classic eventually
I can borrow my dads TR3a too, so I get the best part of owning a classic without the stress of running it, bonus.

Gary,
I have inherited two old cars from my dad, one is a 1929 Morris Minor, similar in size to an Austin Seven, but better, the other is a 1953 Ford Comete, it's a french Ford chassis, but with Facel Metalon, (later Vega) coachwork, a very nice car, but I have to finish it first, will take several years me thinks, unless I can find 50K to throw at it, which I doubt I will.
Classics Rock!!

Almost a classic. 20 years old this year.
Took me 7 years to restore and way too much cash. Finished it in March.
Still drives lovely, goes well, and sounds glorious. Only comes out on VERY sunny days, and is going in a carcoon before Autumn.
Welcome to the world of oily fingers and 13mm spanners!

The Mini was very rare
Was one owner from new (my dad) was allegedly the last Mk3 'S' built as my dad threatened court proceedings to get it when they announced they were stopping production and tried to return his deposit and full Stage 3 Downton cars were very rare especially as it had all the body mods too. (Sadly was stolen in the 90's, presumed stolen to order for the Japanese market )
Started a life long thing for Minis (still have a 90 Copper with 1400 Stage 4 and 5spd etc.,..) and had the same effect on some of my friends too.
Still not as rare as the Tiger or Bora though!

Golden Oldies Face City Ban
Classic car drivers could find themselves banned from city centres across the UK if new plans under consideration are given the go-ahead.
The controversial scheme centres on an idea being mooted by the office of London Mayor Ken Livingstone. Not content with charging drivers £5 a day to enter the centre of the capital, he's now looking at banning vehicles made before 1992 in a bid to improve air quality. As with the congestion charge, the scheme could spread nationwide if it's a hit.
It's likely to be called a Low Emission Zone (LEZ), and at a recent Mayoral meeting, Livingstone said he was considering implementing it in all 33 London boroughs. In effect, owners of J-reg cars or older - including many classics - would be prohibited from the city, with wrongdoers fined via the cameras and procedure already in place for the toll.
But critics have already pointed out that, while LEZ is likely to get some untaxed and uninsured motors off the road, plus crack down on abandoned cars, it might not make much difference. All vehicles, regardless of age, must pass an emissions test at their annual MoT anyway, and diesel-engined taxis and buses are among the worst polluters.
And if you live outside London, don't think this won't affect you. It could be the thin end of the wedge, and other towns and cities may follow suit. A Mayor's office spokesman played down fears of the scheme being swiftly implemented. "This is just one of the ideas to come out of a study," he said. "It's too early to say it will happen. We're aware of the issues regarding taxis and buses, and this is why they are being upgraded." Gavin Ward

Welcome to the world of oily fingers and 13mm spanners!
All good stuff. I had a Sunbeam Alpine insured with Aeon Flux. As a second car it was dead cheap.
Now I have 2 Spitfires, 2 Fiat 500 Bambinas (suicide doors) and a straight eight Ford Businessman Coupe from the 20's.

You must have typed that whilst I was editing my post. 5/8" added. They're the three main ones.
Will try and post pics of one of the Spitfires if I can find somewhere to host them. Or if someone wants them by email let me know. Can't be too many Triumph Spitfires out there with a 350ci Chevy V8 lump in them.

1962 Ford Consul Capri - looks standard in red with white vinyl roof apart from the minilite alloys.....
Now boasting a V6 Essex from a Mk2 Capri, 5 speed box (Sierra), PA brakes (Sierra), Custom twin pipes with cherry bombs...
Also a Mk2 Cortina estate - was a 1300 Superdeluxe - again looks standard but low, with a 2 litre pinto, rack and pinion steering conversion, 5 speed, 3 litre capri brakes etc etc
The cortinas been parked in my garage taking up space since it failed the MOT at xmas - needs chassis welding to get it through.
If anyone wants to come start it/tow it away for free, they're more than welcome.
Was a great daily driver till the MOT - dont have the time/money/tools/space to sort it and its far too good (and a classic) to scrap.
If anyone wants it, drop me an email

Gary,
Contact details for Aon Ltd, PO Box 27, Falcoln House, The Minories, Dudley, West Midlands, DY2 8PF. Tel 01384 455 011 Hope you find them useful.
Wilf - Tiger is a great car, it is the only one of my cars I would do ANYTHING to hang on to and was one of Carroll Shelby's favourite cars, he was even quoted as saying that a well sorted Tiger is a better car than a Cobra - and he should know!
Regards
Robin
