I'm thinking of swapping my elise for an evo 7, i love the lotus, but just fancying a change, and these seem to be about the same value. I'd welcome anyones opinion especially if you've owned one.
I know EVO 8 is more highly rated, but i cannot afford one, & i know the evo 6 is well thought of, but i feel the 7 will be more reliable even if its not as rapid.
Thanks
Ric

Hi mate, just go for a spin in one and then tell me theey aint rapid! Dont let people put you off., sure it aint as agressive looks wise as the 6, but its miles better in terms of interior and refinement.....just try one...!

i'm getting one which after my iffy scoob experience i hope to be a good choice.

from what i've read they are as fast as a 6, in fact, low ratio 1st gear means they are quicker of the mark.

T

ps- BEWARE, the 6 (much like the P1) may be regarded by many as the "one" to have but they are looking dated and in 3 years when you sell on they will look very silly next to 7's, 8's and 9's!

There isnt going to be a 9. The 8 will be the last & then they are swapping the platform

5's & 6's are the best - they are the most hardcore

as i have said- 5's and 6's may be "hardcore" but are no faster. right now i think the 6 looks good but i dont want to own one in 2/3 years when it (like the P1) will look very dated compared to later models.

Thumbs up

Evo 5's and 6's have rally heritage which is always good for demand plus,if they look as 'dated' as an Escort cossie looks now in 6 or 7 years,I for one could live with it.

step outside the "car fan" world.....most ppl would not rate a cossie as being anything special.....P1's are already looking old.

OK.I have an Evo 5(white),my cousin has an Evo 7(French Blue). On fast B-roads my car can pull away from him slightly, but my car is fully decatted-his is a standard car.Inside the 7 seems more refined, less rough around the edges, less'rally car'(although we rally a gp4 Escort so anything is refined compared to that). That said the interior of the 7 is much nicer than the 5 or 6.The 7 doesnt feel as quick, either as a passenger or driver, although this must be to do with refinement,as it is as quick, maybe quicker.Looks wise, put the two together and the 7 looks way more modern The 5 looks like a beast beside it and it must be said a bit dated.Public perception-drive down a street in a 7 and nobody
notices-drive down the same street in a 5 or 6 and everybody notices(most probably thinking-what a tosser).Which is the better car-the 7,it is evolution after all.Which would I prefer-really dont mind.Which one would I like to own in 5-10 years time-a 5 no doubt.Just my thoughts.

The EVO VII is an awesome car. We have had two VI's and a VII. They are very quick even in standard guise. Build quality is better than the Impreza and the engines are much tougher and receptive to modification if that's your thing.

I only had 2 criticisms:-

1) The ride is totally rock hard, even driving on a gritted road jarrs your spinal column

2) The rear spoiler on the VII flaps about at speed. This is annoying when you look in your rear view mirror.

Apart from that they are quite superb and don't forget that even if it is an import any Mitsubishi dealer will service it, just don't expect them to be totally knowledgeable about the car.

Cheers

"drive down the street in a 7 and nobody notices you"

...sorry but that is not my experience of Vii ownership. I have had mine for 7 months now and i get a lot of attenting driving it (not all good i might add) lots of people point it out to there mates when I drive by and people in other cars stare at you at traffic lights etc...very noticable car but I agree not as agressive to look at as earlier models....but i like that.

Drives amazing and feels like it is on rails, push it too far and it will 4 wheel drift or oversteer in a progressive way, minimal understeer and easy to powerslide. AYC get slagged of by the hardcore drivers cos it gets in the way. I like it, you can get the car sideways and hold it and powerslide no problem and the AYC does not get in the way as far as I am concerned.

The Vii accelerates to 60 and beyond just as quick as earlier evos if not quicker. Defo quicker round the track due to improved handling and 50% stiffer body. Viii meant to be even better.

Interior better than pervious evos, same running costs, mpg, service interval, etc.

Ride is not too hard...I have asked everybody who has been in my car the same question "is the ride to hard" they have said no...and that includes my mum who is a right moaning git

Enigne does not sound anywhere near as good as a scoob, but the FQ300 I have comes with a 5" tail pipe as standard that has a lovely tone to it...can also hear the turbo but not too much...hks Racing suction kit or similar product is all you need to make the engine sound like a fire breathing beast.

The vii rocks in every way....but i own one so i am biased

If you can put up with the "less agressive" looks then I think it is better than all previous evos...not sure about the Viii yet as I have not driven one.

test drive one and i think you will probably part with you cash and buy one

I have had the pleasure of being a passenger around several circuits in most of the Evo 7 variants:- RS, GSR, Extreme S and they all handle superbly and just that bit better than my Evo 5 and the 6's I have been in.

The styling on the 7 has been tamed down a bit to make it more mainstream but dont think for a second that any of the handling or performance have been tamed down, its slighly heavier than the 5/6 (40kgs in GSR mode) but has more grunt lower down to compensate.

Thanks guys, just the comments i was hoping for.
I love the look of the 5 & 6, but it aint for me, the 7 seems to call my attention, more subtle & classy, rather than ***** out **** em type of attitude. (i must be gettin old )
If i sell my Lotus i'll be getting a 7 then, anyone around south yorkshire fancy takin me out for a quick spin in exchange for a pint !
Many Thanks

Tiggs, re your comment about stepping outside the 'car fan' world... I hope you're not labouring under the misapprehension that anyone outside the 'car fan' world will have the faintest idea about what an Evo is! Be prepared to be mistaken for a Vectra with a nasty wing. Or (more usual this one) a Scooby.

And Catalunya74, you are surely the first person to use the words 'classy' and 'subtle' when talking about an Evo of any denomination!

lol- no my point was that people like me (not what i would call a big car fan) no what an evo is but think 6's,P1's and cossies look like a 16 yr old nova lovers wet dream

they are just to "halfords" for me, now a VII will give me the performance with out the demon *****/tweeks look.

T

ps- as an example im also look at a BMW 330 so it needs to compete/compare with that.

Interior - BMW

Performance - EVO

These cars cant be more different if you tried .

My honest appraisal of a standard EVO7,

- not as quick as my TypeRA
- interior not as good as my TypeRA
- styling similar but different (not good different or bad different just different)
- noise not as good as my TypeRA
- tunability EVO has it but bits aint cheap
- insurance slightly more than the RA
- mpg LOL, I guess about the same, early 20s
- AYC definitely helps but not really had time to play fully to see if it gets in the way
- overall car feel, a very good car and plenty fast enough just not got enough for me (personally) to swap it. Coming from a UK scoob to an RA, I can see why people with UK scoobs are blown away by them though.

Pays ya money ..................

Also forgot to mention that the EVO VII has probably the worlds smallest petrol tank. Range <200 miles

PMSL, not a chance of finding that thread.

Chris P just wants and Evo and wont admit it, kinda like being gay but doesnt want to come out of the closet.

It says something when you have to come on here and keep reminding yourself of the reasons why you didnt get an Evo.

My spooling sucks today!
