Going to have a look at one with a mate tomorrow.
Only thing I'm wary of is that's done 160k miles!
It's a 98R and has FSH.
Do these take miles well or should he steer clear even if it is mint?
What should we look out for?
The bloke wants about £5700 for it.
Cheers.

mate Honda engines are bullet proof, but he's having a laugh at price. Its worth max of 5k
Has the clutch been changed?
Check for rust around the rear arches this is a common weak spot
Cheers

at that sort of age/mileage check for the radiator and the water pump as they are prone to needing replaced, the gear synchro's might on it's way out .........as long as the engine has been regularly serviced then it should be ok, also check for rust round the base of the rear spoiler and rear arches..especially where it meets the rear bumper.

With a FSH (Honda or specialist) it should be sound. No reason it should be particularly rusty - I know of one that has a problem on the bottom of one door. Certainly rust on the rear arches is not common.
If you only do a small mileage yourself then it'd be worth a look, but if you intend putting a lot of miles on then I wouldn't bother.
5700 is a ridiculous price - I'd pay a max of 3700. Good lower mileage ones are going for around 6k, plenty of low mileage imports around the 5k mark.
Gear synchro's can go and it's not cheap to get it sorted.

160K miles is pushing it - even for Honda - it is likely that some engine work will be round the corner - its only a 1.8 after all.
I'd be more concerned about the gearbox/clutch/transmission at that age which will certainly be nearing the end of its life.
Gastro
PS - the price is way way too high BTW

It was a nice motor. New clutch at 130k and totally mint. Pulled very well in every gear and had a pile of bills, serv history, etc.
He wouldn't go below £5200, though, so we walked.
Cheers for the tips

Plus, I was surprised by this motor. Despite its massive miles it honestly drove and felt like a new car.
I was particularly impressed by its handling, balance and the way it pulled.
Might consider one for myself in future.
Didn't have that FWD 'feel'.

Unless I was going to clock it and rip someone off then yes I would sell it for less as if I was actually trying to get rid of it then I would need to price it realistically.

Somebody once told me that Honda have 'NEVER' had a warranty claim on any of the engines from the Type-R range!!
This includes all (Worldwide) sales of:
-Integra
-Accord
-Civic
-S2000
and this is upto 100k miles!
£5,700 does sound like a bit of a pull-yer-pants-down **** take as two of my friends who have tegras say that the clutches are good for 30k miles tops (with spirited driving of course ) and i'm not sure about the durability of the driveshafts or gearboxes either
If it were me though and had seen the car in the flesh, I would take it on the merit of what stood before me
Good Luck
PS: Another consideration is WTF will it be worth when you come to sell it with even more miles on???????????????

Or find one with sensible miles!
The 160k were virtually all motorway as he was a rep and used the allowance toward a car he actually wanted as opposed to a Vectra.
He was too much of a ***** though, and was arsey when we pointed out that it was overpriced.
He'll never sell it with that attitude.
Is the Accord a better bet?

FP - As you say on a car of that age, 160k is going to be motorway miles. As long as it's serviced a Honda will be as strong as ever at that age. I've a Prelude that's fast approaching 300k - FSH - and it drives perfectly.
Don't let high miles put you off Honda's, it's more important that they have proper history. Subject to sensible pricing obviously
The Accord is a 'nice' car, but it isn't a 'teg - and they're generally more expensive.

My old Honda mechanic told me that as long as the oil is changed at the quoted intervals these engines will run and run with no probs.
The VTEC engine is probably one of the best engines out there at the mo for performance and reliability IMHO.

mooseracer--- is it a 2.2 prelude vtec you own? I am toying with the idea on buying one..........i know mechanically they're sound but heard the 4ws and abs sensors are expensive if needed replaced.
How's the bodywork ??
Have you had these probs ??

At 160K the Teg's just run-in, but unless you intend keeping it for a few years it'll be difficult to sell on IMHO. My son has a '90 CRX VTEC that gives my STI a run for it's money, frighteningly quick and excellent road holding. I have Prelude 2.2 VTEC which the MY97 has replaced, when I sell it that is, It's 4WS takes a bit of getting used to at slow speeds but once you get the hang of turning in late it parks in some tight spaces. Honda engines are bulletproof had them for a couple of years. Hondas are ultra reliable all round. I did have a test drive of a 98 Teg and must say I wasn't too impressed.

kenny c - mines not the 2.2vtec (sadly) but a normal 2.0. The same thing goes with them though - as long as they're well serviced they'll go on and on.
Bodywise mine is fine - it has just the very start of some rust around the rear arches but apart from that it's sound. ABS sensors and the electrical 4ws can be expensive - ABS sensors are more common failures (mine has just gone) than the steering though. Apart from that the electrics are fine.
BTW, all this talk of Honda having had no VTEC engine failures is wrong. They have had no warranty claims on the actual VTEC mechanism, but obviously have had engines let go.

I have an Integra Type R and at 82K miles it did go back and I got a new engine under warranty. I did a drive shaft at 89K miles, again fixed under warranty.
The service manager there told me that he had just "done" two ATR's too with the same thing. The little end went whatever that is?
Thought I should give a balanced view. It's still a top car though and I wouldn't change it for anything at the moment cos you never see another one on the roads which I like

Like someone said in a previous post, the 'no warranty claim' only refers to the Vtec mechanism and not the whole engine, which seems subject to the same laws of physics as other manufacturers engines. Just ask BAR or Jordan!
