I prefer the completely standard looking MK2 GTI 8V +16V to any modded golf. Still nice though.

I like them don't get me wrong but the original unmessed up cars look the best and they even have some period charm now. Plus why would you want to get rid of those twin headlights? Mark my words in a few yrs the trend will be for 100% standard looking ones (except perhaps some brake/engine mods)

Forget the Mark 2 altogether - far too lardy ar5ed - a good example of what happens to a decent car when marketing departments and accountants are let loose - a bit like the new Scoobies really ;-)
Anyway get a clean-ish Mark 1 and debadge, dechrome etc. Nice paint job, decent suspension, big wheels (watch the offsets).
Drop in a 16v engine/gearbox from the Mark 2 and add some NOS for real fun.
You'll have one of the best looking/handling Golfs with plenty of power all for less money than a decent secondhand Scoob.
Go on - you know you want to.
Regards,
tiggers.

I agree that the Mk1 looks the best, but given how easy it is to buy a dog then a late Mk2 (big bumper) with nothing else done except maybe a set of subtle, flat-faced 16's and a subtle suspension drop is as far as you should go on the looks front. Oak green or Windsor blue would be my colour choices. Leave the grille and lamps alone, the indicators orange etc. The Mk1 and Mk2 GTi's are cool and classless until they are messed around with too much, then they just become tat like the XR3 etc. of the same era.

That's the idea (although that's slightly too low, has clear inmdicators, G60 arches and vents in the wings).
BTW if anyone with a Golf wants a set of Porsche Design 90's like those in pretty good condidtion let me know as mine can be spare with a little notice.

Tiggers, I think you may be reffering to the MK3, the MK2 is as quick as a MK1 (standard 1.8's) and only weighs about 80 kilos more but has better torque (mk1 8 valve is not the same engine), better aeordynamics, better brakes, nicer interior etc, I like MK1's but after having two I prefer the MK2, you have to be a real purist to appreciate a standard MK1 and they need a lot of mods to make viable for daily use nowadays, MK2 for daily use and a MK1 for weekends/messing with.

Hi J4cko,
I know that in performance terms the Mk1 and Mk2 are not that far apart although if memory serves me correctly the final Mk 1's had the early Mk2's 1.8 engine and five speed box (I think I'm right as I owned a 1984 Mk 1 Campaign so I ought to be). Hence the last of the Mk 1's were quite nippy for the time.
No my comment is really based on the styling - I still to this day think the Mk 1 is the best looking Golf ever. I drove a good Mk 1 GTI belonging to a work colleague about 12 months ago and although it had a few mods (mainly to do with getting the brakes to actually stop the car !!!) it was still a great car and brought back some good memories.
I think you'd be surprised just how well they measure up to modern machinery. The exception would have to be the interior of course although that sort of thing has never really bothered me. Many people have slagged off my Scooby's interirors over the years and I just don't see what they're complaining about - good seats, pedals, steering wheel and a gear change mechanism - what more do you need.
Regards,
tiggers
P.S. As for the Mk 3 Golf GTI - YUK!!!

Tiggers, I think we are thinking along the same lines !
I love both, I have had 7 Golf GTI's, all 8 Valves apart from one sixteen valve which turned out to be a turkey and not that much quicker, would love another mk1 though, MK3 16 valve engine, all the suspension mods, cage, no body mods, nice wheels in Mars red, perfect !

As for the MK3, I am upset with VW, as MK3's are now my obvious next daily driver (keeping the MK2 whatever) I am peed off that they are so ugly, there was a nice green one for sale on here a whilse back but generally they are hideous, we bought a new mk3 in 1995, never really liked it, sold it to my brother in law and his missus decided to put it on its roof as she wanted to re-arrange its looks so much !
MK4, ok ish but not for anyone who likes driving.

J4cko,
Now you're talking. Trouble is finding a good unmolested Mk1 is hard work as all the good ones tend to be in the hands of loving owners.

Jacko, I think that the Green Mk3 your talking about is a guy from Aberdeen, its a 16v on 17" Cross Spokes, running about 170bhp, looked absolutely mint... Extremely Clean!!
I agree that the Mk1 is a great wee back road weapon with a sorted chassis and engine, but for daily use I would use a Mk2 with 2.0 16v mildly tuned (miles better than a VR6 conversion IMHO), slightly stiffened & lowered over 16" BBS alloys, standard bodywork sprayed in a nice subtle colour, maybe a deep, dark metallic Blue or green. Black leather re-trim of some optional electric recaro seats... Very nice!!
Cheers,
Grant

Tell you what I have realised from this thread - I am still, like many others it would seem, a Golf GTI fan.
It must be in the blood, now about that Mk 1...

Sold my (standard even down to the bbs) 1990 Mk2 16v 4 yrs ago. Got offered £4500 with 100k miles, broken exhaust and worn tyres. Was going to keep it for my g/f, still wish I had - great car

This is my old Mk2, now just a bare shell..
I realise the colour was a bad choice. but 5 years ago it was cool
Thinking of painting it a dark blue colour and going "old skool"

I know its not a GTI, but this is my Mint Mk2!
Two lady owners before me from the same town! 80,000 miles with all VW dealer service stamps(including the heater recall mod)! I drove about 100 miles from london to pick her up and she hasn't missed a beat since.
I believe the lines of the Mk2(Mk1 also) are classic.
