Alfa 33 Permanent four !
#1
Had a race with one of these today in my MK2 Golf GTI 8v, a bit quicker than mine but not much, eventually pulled past on a dual Carriageway.
Impresseed wih the noise and the fact it held together long enough to pass me !
Real rarity, a mate at work had one (Are you there Jeff ?) and the diff cage separated from the floor, one of many tales of woe surrounding that car. Cannot be many about now as they were dodgy when new so most would depreciate like any Alfa, conk out and not be worth repairing, cant imagine what sane person would buy one nowadays.
Anybody got any experience of these, are they that bad ?

Got three road tests (in my extensive collection !) on the permanent 4.Generally panned all round.
Shame as my dad was a big Alfasud fan and I'm sure I would have had one if they had been half decent.
Went the Mazda 323 4x4 Turbo, Celica GT4, Legacy Turbo, Impreza route instead.

I had a Alfa 33 1.5ie. Top mota apart from the usuall Alfa woes of rust and electrical niggles. Ran it for 3 years and apart from a huge appetite for brake pads (due to me driving like a loony) nothing else went wrong with it.
Not sure what spec the one that raced you was but I'd be very surprised if an 8v Golf Gti would stay up with it as they were very quick due to being so light. Superb engine and as you say exhaust note to die for. Wouldn't think there'd be too many good ones left now so be careful if your gonna get one.

Had a 33 1.3 with twin Webers on holiday in Italy many years ago, it was a cracker. Fantastic noise heeling & toeing round the little winding Italian roads. Really flew for a 1.3 too.

My sister had a 1.4. She loved it to bits and it complied, lol, no doubt helped by her driving style.
Old ones are cheap to pick up so its good fun for the money.

Nearly bought a 1.5ie years ago but the deal fell through, mate had one but not in permanent 4 only fwd, its a 1.7 16v boxter engine.... it was very fast and it used to outrun another friends 8v golf no problems....
Rusted to pieces in the end though, electronics were always going wrong too.

Had a 33 16v 1.7 Boxer Quadrifoglio in black.
Never had any problems with it apart from the odd electrical gremlin.
It was quick and made a noise that was a bit like a Scooby but bangs and pops on overrun in every gear without fail.
I loved that car then a stupid bint in a Ka rear-ended it, writing it off.
(Crap) Pic below:
Cheers
