Got offered an MR2 Turbo yesterday by a mate at work, only trouble is that the gearbox is now a mass of bits of metal in a metal case arranged in no particular order, i.e. its knackered, it also needs a tie rod and a Thermostat.

Its a H reg with nice wheels, tidy ish but needs a good weekend on the bodywork polishing and touching up. Not sure about tax and MOT.

Other thing is that, he says due to the thermostat being knackered it never warms up fully so the ecu doesent allow full boost hence why it wont pull away from my Golf (MK2 8 valve with the usual bolt ons) when in reality it should murder it, does this sound like rubbish and it means the motor/turbo is shot or could it be true,

What is it worth minted, running right with a Full ticket, about 3500 I reckon, any opinions ?

How much is an MR2 Turbo gearbox, I know a normal MR2 box wont fit.

Buy it, even if you end up breaking for spares you'll get your money back.

Its true about the thermostat, if the temp doesn't get above 1/4 on the gauge you will only get 5psi boost. Thats said its still plenty quick enought to do over a golf?
You can get a gearbox from fensport for between 3 and 400 quids then theres fitting. Make sure you get the right box as there are a few variations, although I don't know much about them.

DAYZEE,

Chers for the info, uspect I may buy it now, and no it wont still do over a Golf, Golf has 120 bhp and is running spot on, he says it himself after 2 or 3 attempts to embarass me on the way out of work ! I thought he wasnt trying, he was, I have been in it and wasnt all that impressed but its just not running right. I do admit though that a well one would murder mine.

If the body is good and everything but gearbox is generally sound then it would be a great buy for £800. I paid £4750 for my n/a last year.

Beware though that everything else isnt shafted, take it to a specialist and see what they say. If you fix it up as good as new you will scare the pants off yourself and then start to grin. My n/a is great fun and is quick - imagine what a turbo will be like.

Dayzee is right, go to www.fensport.co.uk - they have a very good reputation. Also register yourself on www.imoc.co.uk as the guys on there are very helpful.

Good luck

Rob
