What car for £40k ??

Never mentioned a P1...!!!!
I can only write my own views, but if you read any motoring mag. you'll find the RS4 is not very highly rated by most motoring jorno's!
In the last review I read which had the RS6, AMG55 and M5 tested by tiff!
The RS6 was quick and uninvolving, not a great chassis!
The AMG was f**king quick but again was quite uninvolving etc!
The M5 was quicker than the RS6 and in Tiff opions was the best drivers car...a modern classic!
Sorry but I agree with Tiff....buy a M5!!
Dom.
PS - I have a MY95 WRX STI RA with quite a few modds, a quicker car on a twisty road than any of the above including any Audi's! I do own a 1991 'J' plate 20v ur quattro so I'm not anti - Audi!

What car would you guys have if you had £40k to spend..my shortlist as follows :
Audi RS4
Porsche 996
New M3 Coupe/conv
It is to be used as a daily commute & will cover about 12k miles per year. Not a necessity but should really have rear seats (can live without)

RS4 has bendy wheel problems... steer clear...
Porsche is a bit too common for the discerning... although sensible for the 'non-committal'.
M3/5 lets you into the none too exclusive 'Dispised for Existing' club
XKR... has many smooth attributes that make it rather fun to own and drive... get a good'en for £35k and spend £4k on some RS mods... ... at least then you can pretend, at times, to be a proper gent rather than a spiv... as the other alternatives convey!

40Grand on a car made from re-cycled Tesco bags?... That has the odour (on a hot day) of cats wee-wee?... Has a reliability record slightly worse than a Morris Marina?
You advise wasting 40Grand on one of those things... it is nothing more than a Trailer-trash ****** wet dream...
I think wee-wee is worse than the original... but I hope that satisfies your sensitivities... sorry.

Torment?
I don't know what you mean?
(To me 'tormenting' has tones of vindictive teasing as in 'Stop tormenting the dog'... do you feel like a whipped cur? ... do you feel great pain? )
Let's stay on track... if we can please!

RX7 Spirit R, the last batch of RX7's ever built.
There are a few still available as Jap imports, around £35k brand new, so you'd have £5k to do a few mods
Top of the tree of RX7's that, you get rarity, performance, Japanese, good looks, something really special with RWD, and it doesnt look like a 4 door saloon, more a supercar.
For that money, its what Id go for.

I have just got a M5 after I sold my XJR. I had a M5, RS4 and a B10 Alpina on my short list.
The RS4 was very unexciting to drive and to be honest a lot slower than the M5 and my Scooby!
The B10 was too hard to find one in the spec. I wanted!
The M5 is faultless, it is well built, supercar quick, fully loaded with all the extras I wanted, big enough for me and my family and IMHO is very cool!
The M5 is as quick as an M3, handles as well as a M3 so why buy a M3???

Mrs Mog here. I am a born petrol head (I grew up in a garage...) and in my humble opinion the RS4 is the best car for me. I am very very fortunate in that I have owned many quick cars including an RS4 and a P1. The P1 was great round the lanes - but for a £32,000 car the build quality was crap (sorry but it was..) Dominicm there is no way that the P1 would keep up with an RS4 and how can you say it is unexciting...... We sold our RS4 a few months ago and bought an uprated TT (AMD) which has never been quick or exciting enough and so we are reverting back to an RS4 this Saturday and I can't wait...... What other car will do 0-60 in less than 5 seconds and still carry the dog and kids... (Please note that I do not drive irresponsibly with my kids in the car (or the dog)!) Anyway how boring would it be if we all liked the same car!!!

Personally I think £35k is too much for an RX7 - not that they aren't worth it so much as that they will be very hard to ever sell on for a decent price... Also a £35k RX7 looks fundementally the same as a £7k one - obviously there is an age and spec dealer but my money is on poor part ex values as a result.
The same won't be true of any of the german cars mentioned or the R34.
