Question

Has anyone ever looked inside one of the tuning boxes you can get for turbodiesels? What electronics are there in there? Is it simply an signal amplifier for the injector pump?

Seems to me that the most costly part of any tuning box is the OEM plug connectors -- surely the rest of the components can be got from Maplins or somewhere similar?

Any experiences, thoughts or input welcome ...

Well they interact directly with the cars ECU, hense why you need a different type of box for different engines. I think its a little optomistic thinking one could be bodged up with some parts from maplins and some tape

seriously though.. be careful. Any kind of "playing" runs the risk of doing damage to your engine, so best air on the side of caution.

Smanning -- no worries, I won't be plunging in with soldering iron smoking just yet

I just can't imagine they are very complex electronically, especially as there are so many different people offering them ....

Have you investigated the "beer mod" on TDIClub.com ?

Involves a resistor....... and that's it.

Thumbs up

Mik -- thanks for the pointer. Looks like it's for the older common-rail motors rather than the PDs, but that's the kind of thing I was getting at ...

Question

You considered remapping. Either conventional chip swap or Revo invisible OBD2 reflash?

Yep -- just as soon as I've got 2000 miles up I'm planning a trip to Revo ...
