So has the Peugeot proved cheaper than the scoob?

Report from Harewood Hillclimb Practice Day

The day before we had been messing around with the fuelling on the DTA ECU in our 205 GTi as it was in our opinion over fuelling at Wide Open Throttle causing the car to cough. So strapped in with laptop on knee whilst brother ragged the living daylights out of the car whilst I try and concentrate on the screen. Flaming good job there's a foot brace and harnesses !
Very wierd feeling not looking around outside whilst been thrown around. Now I know why rally co-drivers have nerves of steel and cast iron stomaches !

By the end of the day it felt quite rapid, although it did need a good revving to get speed up.. more of that later.

Practice Day

06:45 Start on a Sunday !!!
Leave home and depart for Harewood Leeds.

Sign on, and get the car through scrutineering. Slight panic as the battery had waggled loose during the testing the day before and we hadn't noticed. Soon fixed though.

10am Practice starts. Timed runs as per a normal hillclimb event, just it doesn't constitute any competition.
I've the first to take it for a thrashing up the climb.
off the line with a tad too much wheel spin. So far so good.
Down the first length straight, into 3rd and brake hard, all seems ok.

It soon transpires that the car "feels" lifeless, exiting bends it spins like crazy so we're not down in power at high revs but it doesn't feel right. Through the speed trap repeatedly we only managed 66 MPH. Thats down significantly from 72MPH the previous season.

Timed runs of around 74 ~ 76 seconds also made it feel that all wasn't well in the Peugeot camp, well down on previous personal bests of around 70 seconds.

We had the shift change light coming on at around 7800, with the limiter set at 8000 so we certainly short of revs. Up at those revs it was going well, however we were missing lots of power lower down. The cam hasn't changed over last season, only we've new pistons, gas flowed head, lightened and balanced everything.

To say I wasn't amused is somewhat of an understatement, I was expecting us to do much better than we did.
We're currently investigating what on earth has gone amiss. One thing we weren't happy about was the ECU mapping. Infact I've never been happy about it, so it might be time to get it re-mapped up. Currently checking engine basics such as compression pressures at the moment.

My brother in his immactulate MK1 Escort did astonishingly well. Their 2 litre Pinto engine was singing right on tune. Both drivers brother and a mate set a blistering time of just over 70 seconds.

We had video cameras fitted, so you can all see whats involved.

Sorry but each file is about 6Mb. Not small, but the quality is excellent.

You can see how well that Escort handles, its really amazing to drive. Fantastic Quaife straight cut rocket box means you can change gear faster than lightening !!!

Talking of gear changes.... How many times can you f*ck up changing gears in a Peugeot on a Hillclimb ? I count at least 2 in my video

Hopefully we'll be back on track for Curborough Sprint on the 13th April.... but I'm not holding my breath.

Cheaper than the Scoob ?
Buries head in sand ! In reality never.
However its not used at all as a daily drive. Just sits in a garage most of the time so we can perform work on it, which is where I suffered with the Impreza. Using a car as a daily commuter and having it set up for competition are completely at odds.

I ended up with a car which was a bloody nightmare on the road, but good on the track. Not pleasent when I commute over 300 miles a week
