Golf MK2 GTI power mods
#1
I've posted on a few Golf forums and not had the best answers so thought I'd give SN a try.
I have a MK2 8v Golf GTI its the digifant model and I want to upgrade the power as cheaply as possible. All suggestions gratefully received.

Depends on budget I guess!
The easy way is to drop in a new engine!!!
1.9/2.0 8v engines can be fitted for about £1500-2000.
2.8/2.9 VR6 engines are about £3500 fitted.
1.8T engines are about £4500 fitted.
All these prices will vary depending on the engine, supplier, fitting costs, etc! Bear in mind you will need a better clutch and probably brakes for the VR6 or 1.8T lumps (as well as ECU, engine mounts and maybe exhaust!!!!)
You could try the 'easy & cheap' things:
Backbox and centre section
Manifold (TSR do one!)
Induction kit (although some tuners do not recommend them) or a drilled air box.
You could consider some 'wild' cams and some head work!
My 1991 H-reg GTI 8v has:
Sebring exhaust system
Green air induction kit
Koni/Eibach damper/springs
Although I'm looking at selling it!

Wew picked up an engine that my Mate bought from our local scrappers.. 2.0 16v for £80
My mate Gaz who posts on here, has a 1.8 8v on twin 40's , needs setting up, but made it's maiden voyage, terrorising the estate yesterday ... sounds awesome

Nooooo, dont put a 16 valve in it (Unless its the 2.0), I have had both and to be honest I prefer the 8 valve, the 16 valve is pretty flat until high revs, the 8 valve feels quicker 80% of the time but the 16 valve has a nice top end rush. My favourite GTI was my GTI engineering MK1 1.9 with big valves, big exhaust and well set on K Jet, it was loverly, current 8 valve MK2 has Magnex exhaust, K and N and has been rolling roaded at 116.8 bhp, my 16 valve made 131 and the extra 14 bhp was right at the top of the revs.
