Clio Cup

I have one of these cars and they must be the best in terms of price, performance/pound and fuel economy.
Im getting about 300 miles/tank and I dont drive it steady at all.
These things are fast but so good on fuel!
Nothing can compare!

Ours averages 38.7mpg over 4000 miles on Optimax. Better than the 21mpg I'm getting from our P1.
After owning one I still reckon the Cup's the best performance car for the money on sale. Its quick exceptionally fun to drive and aint goin to lose a fortune in depreciation - unlike a new scoob
Only negative so far is the noise at motorway speeds due to lack of sound deadening - but at least it stops me speeding .
No probs with ours yet either (touch wood)

I like the idea of a Cup but everyone slags off the driving position. Have you found it to high? Also I'm 6ft 4ish do you think I'd fit in one. It looks as if I'm gonna return my scoob to the garage I bought it off and get my money back of the C/C company. So I'll have the cash to buy one outright.
How much should I be paying? Have you found the lack of ABS a problem?
All answers gratefully recieved!

I'm 6"2 and 14.5 stone and dont find it a problem at all. Saying that it is an old style offset driving position.
I think being heavy helps as my extra weight pushes me into the seat more. The missus finds the seats less comfy but no more so than most cars.
I do think the whole seat thingy with the Cup is nit picking really with the car.

It brings driving back to its roots.
Its a bit weird coming from a RWD car as tourque steer is odd at first.
The thing that I love the best is the throttle responce, Very sharp!
Get a test drive!

Scoobynew,
The best bet, after watching Right Car-Wrong Car(great program), is to go in there with a price from the net. Use that to bargain, I think you should be looking for a grand off list price at least!! The margin they have on this car is huge, I wouldn't be surprised if he gave you a grand off before you've even started!!

Different Model, different seats, different driving position no doubt, but I simply can't drive my Wife's Clio Expression +. Just not enough room. I'm 6'3" and heavier than Wilf. I had no probs in a Nissan Micra though.
Cheers

Renault are selling the car for under 10 grand to employees, that gives you some idea of the profit margins.
Also look at how they are trying to flog the V6 for now, under 20 grand, that was the price that Renualt employees got it for before the cut!

I've been to test drive one of these today - ace car. Couldn't find the exhaust, though - just saw smoke coming out from underneath the left side of the rear bumper. Anyone got any pics of the rear of a cup - is it supposed to be exhaust-less?

Having owned a MY00 and a Cup I think I can answer this
Apologies if you think I talking nonsense
Impreza Pros
-Slightly quicker and more mid range punch
-Handles better on rough roads - Clio rolls a bit too much and can get unsettled on undulations mid corner
-ABS
-4WD
-More space
-More easily modded to higher BHP
-Mechanical Reliability probably better
-Better on motorway
-more refined and much quieter
-scoob exhaust note
Impreza Cons
-Much less MPG 25 instead of 35
-Higher spares and servicing costs
-less peace of mind from being s'hand
-less luxury kit than Cup (stereo etc)
-turbo lag - a pain round town
-old model (still much better than bugeye IMHO)
-steering is dull compared to Clio
-heavier and less feisty than Clio
-No warranty, AA Breakdown etc
-Costlier to insure
-difficult to find decent example
Difficult choice. Personally I would go for the Cup if it was up to me but I've got another Scoob and have already owned a MY98 and MY00. I won't deny the Scoob is more special and ultimately quicker, easier and more rewarding to drive but IMHO the Renault is more fun in most everday situations in an hot hatch way better value and a much cheaper everday prospect (unless you do lots of motorway driving).
Putting it another way driving the Cup I can enjoy it at any speed but the Scoob only really comes alive when you start pressing on by which time your in licence losing territory. Having said that I can travel at speeds in the Scoob I wouldnt have the ***** to do in Cup.

Thanks for the thorough and objective reply Wilf. I agree with your analysis, and I reckon the deciding factor is fun without endangering my licence, so the Clio's got my vote by about a 55:45 margin.
I'm off to the garage to pay my deposit...

Having gone from MY00 to Clio Cup, I have to agree with Wilf's analysis - spot on.
Still getting used to the novelty of fuel computer reading 39.3mpg under mixed driving. Scooby did about 25mpg under similar conditions.
One other downside of the clio is that the ride is far bouncier, although I have yet to experiment with tyre pressures.
Still a great laugh though....

That was quick Gary, you don't mess around. My bro ordered his three weeks ago and is getting his on Tuesday. Some 172 vs Cup showdowns will be taking place in the coming weeks!

My cup was ready today, so I picked it up at lunchtime. Spent the whole day razzing - what a fantastic handling car! Totally gorgeous, rapid, pleasantly noisy and firm yet supple. Last thing I drove that handled, felt and sounded this well was an Integra a couple of years back when I was driving a civic vti. I've lost touch with high revs since then because of the golf vr6 I've had. Having said that, comparison with honda vtec engines doesn't do the renault justice - it's so flaming torquey that you don't need to rev it to make progress. Fantastic car.
And renault are thinking of bringing out approved mods? Could it go any faster??
