What about the MK1 MR2, for £3k you can buy one and sort the suspension, brakes, spare wheels, decent tyres etc. Cracking little motors.
Or you could try finding an AE86 like mine
325i is a good motor though, but most are pretty ragged now it seems, a real shame.

Porsche 924 = sh!te, vw van engine
Alternatively you could get the 924S. Which has the 2.5 944 engine (also faster than the 944 as it is lighter) should be able to get a good one for £3k
Also prepared track car for sale here

Sylva Striker kit car. Weights about .5 tonne, so even with a bog standard 1.6 crossflow it's reasonably fast, handles like a caterham, great fun. If you feel like it later, give it a zetec or k series, and you'll beat an elise.

u would just about pickup an old (E or F reg) rwd sapphire cosworth for that money.
It wont be mint, but u could get a reliable if slightly tatty one for that money. Spend £200 on a chip/boost upgrade and get 270bhp. Big bhp + rwd + much cheapness = FUN !
Or go the 205 route (but fwd).

Furywise - no chance - I've never seen one less than about £5k, £6-10k is more normal. Strikers tend to be cheaper, and I have met a couple of people who have had some with standard crossflow engine for sensible cash.
From the back of March edition of which kit:
Sylva Leader, 1600 X-flow £1695. Westfield 1600 x-flow £4250 ono
Buy a kit magazine and have a browse if you're really interested. Remember with that little weight and that good handling you don't need silly power to have fun. Add more power later if you like for more fun: my brother's 2 litre zetec fury lived with a certain Mr Rainbird's 400+bhp Sierra Cossie to about 90 (repeated many times) on one memorably fun occassion.

Be different
You can get a fairly reasonable 2.3-16v Mercedes 190 for that - shockingly good round corners - comes with a bomb proof (ish) engine, dogleg 5 speed with 1:1 top, LSD, big brakes, and fully adjustable (for track n camber) 5 link rear end, mac-strut front.
Take the interior out, and it'll take a lots of weight of it (typical heavyweight fully loaded german affair)
No real tuning parts for em, but will accept turbo's no problem, and apparently, superchargers from the current 4 cylinder Kompressor cars bolt straight on.
Suspension?
Don't touch it - like the E30 M3, its near perfect from the crate.
Brakes?
No need - good enough for serious abuse with all the weight on it, let alone stripped out
If you want any help sourcing one - email me...

Nissan 200SX seem a popular car for this sort of thing. Probably be a lot more fun than a bmw 3 series. Sports coupe VS family saloon. I think you can guess which is more suited
