Hyundai Coupe's
#1
Does anyone know anything about the MK1 Hyundai Coupes? I am thinking of selling my Golf TDi as it is just too boring and bland looking. I quite like the look of the coupes and the one in question is a silver F2 so looks very nice IMO.
The car has just under 40k on it and is a 98 S reg. It has FSH etc, leather, CD, aircon, electric sunroof, all for 6.5k. This seems like a good deal to me, but I wanted to know if there is anything to look out for.
Thanks for any info,
Steve

They're good cars, quite quick too!
I used to work in a Hyundai dealership
When you first drive them, the handling seems a little odd.... give it time and they are actually quite good, very predictable if a little tail happy(lift off oversteer).
You might be a little dissapointed with the interior build qaulity, coming from a Golf. They do have a tendancy to rattle a bit. They didn't really have any weak points, the wheels were the only downside, they would corrode.... the F2 ones didn't seem to suffer though.
The big service is due at 40K, try get it done before you buy It should include all the filters, oils and belts, including the timing belt. They seem to benefit from a 4 wheel alignment too.
Good luck
Bob

PS, is it just the F2 or the F2 EVO? The EVO was played with by MSD, it had different wheels, bigger spoiler, stainless zorst and MSD chip... they were quick

Thanks BOB.T.
It is just the F2 not the F2 evo.
Dont suppose you have any idea what the consumption on them is do you? I bought the TDi because the cooby was costing too muc overall to run, including the petrol. Im getting about 500 miles on the Golf for 40 quids worth of diesel. I know the Hyundai wont be as good as that but I was hoping for it being somewhere inbetween the two - 220 miles on 33 quid for the Scooby, or 8p a mile for the Golf, 15p a mile for the scooby.
Thanks again,
Steve

2 weeks ago Auto Express ran an article on buying and running Hyundai Coupes. They gave a mpg figure of 25, and slaughtered it for having such uneconomical figures. I believe that was the 2 litre version.

Thanks XT. I am leaning towards changing at the moment. Im going to test drive the car this Saturday. I do over a 1000 miles a month though so economy is pretty important to me.

I've had a tussle with the latest V6 version and beat it easily from stand-still. Accelerating from 80ish to 1*0 though we were neck and neck. It has a huge torque output. Got a thumbs up from the driver who thought he'd blow me away...
Looks nice though IMHO.....not a bad motor

I used to work for them in '98 and thought they were awful, the build quality was very questionable, the tyres always deflated themselves and 1.8 Mondeos would go past you with what seemed like ease. On the plus side they dont look too bad, although judging gaps first of all can be fun (seem so low down and wide) and the spec pound for pound looked pretty good in camparison to its so called competetion, with air con, leather, etc. Residual wise they weren't good at all and parts can be expensive (brother in law still has his, only done 15k miles on a S plate). The F2's looked better IMO. Also theres something you can do to them that costs no money and gets you another 10-15bhp, but for love nor money I cant remember what it was....

Thanks for the replies guys. I dont quite understand how a 2.0 137 bhp car can get past with ease by a 115 bhp Mondeo. Especially when the 0 - 60 times are 8.6 and 10.5 respectively? Ive been in an F2 already (only as a passenger) and it obviously didnt feel Subaru quick, but it didnt feel that sluggish either. I suppose I'll find out on Saturday anyway.
Thanks for the help,
Steve

I have to admit that my second car is a MY00 2.0 Coupe. 137bhp with bags of tourque.
I really didn't want to buy it but the wife thought it looked nice. Strange thing is that I've really grown to like it. It returns 35mpg going to 30mpg on a bad day, is really easy to drive and it's quicker than you think. I'd say it's faster than most rep mobiles and it dosn't understeer as much as the scoob.
I'd agree that the handling can seem a little strange at first but when you've driven it a while you'll find lots of grip and it's very chuckable.
It can be rattly on the interior and on start up it sounds a little coarse, so turn the radio up and enjoy!
I've not had anything major go wrong and the paintwork can take a lot more punishment than the scoob. Get it in red and it'll turn heads all day long.
There ain't nothing that 'll touch it for value that's for sure. I've even had 2 offers to buy it from me at work.

Oh, and another thing, I drove the new V6 the other day. It's quite good IMO, nice enigine note, good ride/handling and much improved interior. The price you pay is that the performance isn't much better than the 2.0 and fuel consumption goes down to scoob levels.
Stick with the 2.0ltr if you want the new one.

And the surveys says...... come on, what did you think to it?
Kingy, I notice you're from W.Yorks, do you mind me asking where you bought your car from?

Hi,
I had a 2.0 SE, one of the first batch over, from new. It was a good car for the money. Didn't suffer too much at all from squeaks or rattles, and normally returned low to mid 30's mpg. Worst was 25 when hoofing it abit.
I would say the only problems I had were, the speedo's electric sender unit failed, warranty job, the wheels starting to corrode, weak laquer coat, replaced under warranty and the steel sunroof panel. The rubber seal hadn't been bonded properly, so the edge started to rust, another warranty job.
Other than that I was more than happy with the performance and handling of it.
A bit of usless information for you, but the F2 version's front bumper and rear spoiler were penned by Peter Stevens, and chosen from various options, along with the wheels and some other detail changes by the first owners of the coupes. As a result of choosing the options a limited edition print of the F2, signed by Peter Stevens was sent to the participants. IIRC the changes were also used to homolgate it for tarmac rallies in the F2 class. Prior to that it had previously been developed for and used on gravel rallies only.

Cheers for all the replies guys. I test drove it on Saturday and was very impressed. It seemed like the perfect compromise between the Scooby and my new TDi. Nice and quick and handled very well, but it was also calm and relaxed on the motorway. It seemed to be pretty economical and was certainly very nice to look at inside and out IMO. Just got to agree a price now and sell my TDi.

We tried a new shape Coupe yesterday - 2.0 SE, and very good it was too. No ball of fire, but it had tidy handling, is well specced, seemed to have good build quality, looks gorgeous and has a 5 year unlimited mileage warranty. My Wife is now convinced.
She also had the MK 1 Coupe when she lived in the Middle East, and it was totally reliable - nothing went wrong at all.
Cheers
