Fiat Coupe 20v turbo
#1
Went in one the other day, was impressed once it got going, 1st 2nd gear are boost limited and didnt feel mega fast but once into third it hit a 100+.... didnt make much noise from the exhaust or engine as it was standard, didnt give an impression of going really fast....
Been in a M3 e36 3L and it felt quicker... how do they (fiat)comapre to a 276 bhp impreza/Evo4/5/6???
Thanks Moz
1987 astra GTE stop gap car...100 times better than Corrado's!

At motorway speeds will quite easily beat 90% of scoobies (despite what others will tell you)will also stick with a standard Evo (from a rolling start)to about 100 then slowly pull away. FWD so crap traction, book figures are 6.4 to sixty and 14.5 to a ton, top speed in excess of 155.
Also very nice interior IMO.

What the coupe will slowly pull away from an evo after a ton??? noway????.... its got 5 gears his one and i know they made them with 6 gears, they might hit 155 with 6 gears not 5 though. Just didnt seem neck breaking fast to me, ive never been in a scooby or evo unfortunatly but will do when its time to buy a car.
Yeah i had a Corrado G60 185 bhp and i kid u not ive had more fun in my 16 year old 8v astra in a month than i had in my corrado in 2 years, bigest dissapointing car ive owned and wont go down that route again....

in a straight line, the coupe will hammer a UK Turbo (after 60) - as I have learnt! Apparently, supposed to be neck n neck with a 280bhp scooby (which mine will be very shorty )

Wet 'n twisties? No chance against the invincible scoob!

Having driven both, FCT20VT quicker, no doubt about it, quicker in every increment apart from going from a standstill, remember the FCT is more powerfull, weighs similar, hasd an extra cylinder and doesent have the extra 4wd power loss. Scoob is so much more fun to drive though, I drove a UK Turbo (Terzo) and to be honest I didnt think it was all that quick, I had a Volvo T5 at the time and I expected it to be shedloads quicker in a straight, it wasnt, the FCT did seem quicker. Scoob is the best package thoughg and the handling/driving experience is so much better.

Mozza,
Get yourself a Teg (Integra Type R) if your after a coupe, loads of fun, more so than a scooby and EVO IMHO.... Feels very sporty indeed, fast too once it's going, and nothing quite matches that VTEC sound

Hi All,
I read your Forum regular and have to admit it's one of the better one's on the Net.
Nice to see you are discussing the 20VT again (there was another thread not so long ago), and it's good to see that most of you are aware of it's capabilities. Both Scoobs and Coupes are excellent but very different cars, similar in performance (dependant upon which Scoob) and both very affordable!
Had a minor tussle with an N reg Red Scoob yesterday travelling up the M1 (joined me at junc 35A), once we got a clear bit of road I pulled away from him quite easily, after that he backed off. I came off at junc 38, and on travelling through Royston he had caught up with me again so must live around there somewhere? Had we had a tussle on the country roads around there though it would probably have been a bit closer! If anyone thinks they know this Scoob Owner (gold wheels as well I think), or if you are reading this, let us know what spec your Scoob is??
20VT for smooth open road speed, unique styling and amazing value.
Scoobs for handling, grip and on the edge point to point performance (on B roads etc. unless you've got 280 bhp+!!) also great value.

MozzaITA... i had a 1990 8 valve GTE for 11 years from new ... i only swapped it for the scoob as it was starting to get a bit rusty, but even after 11 years i still loved driving it. They may not have been the best handing car but were very safe IMO, i could get that car a lot more sideways
A mate has it now, i gave it to him, so i still get to drive it sometimes.

Hi all
I am also a biased coupe 20VT owner but also browse here regularly.. some valid arguments indeed and i admit i have never driven a scooby but been in a standard turbo..
It is quicker off the line than the coop but as someone pointed out the 20vt's 60-100 time is 8 sec flat which destroys a lot of cars that are geared to hit 60 in 6 point something.. (mate has a MG TF 160 and he bangs on how it does 60 in 6.9 and i say yeah but what about 100 ? takes about another 15 secs !!)
If you want a good coupe buy 2nd hand like i did - i got a W reg (one of the last made) 20VT 6 speed with leather, push button start etc for £14k from a dealer with 11k miles ( that was 2 years ago) I now use it as a fun 2nd car so it still has only done 30k and is worth about £9-£10k.. but it is the most reliable car i have owned.. only a new battery and the 24k service in 24 months.. thats it !
Dont agree about the lack of engine noise tho.. the coops 5 cylinder engine sounds great if you floor the throttle.. and IMO the good thing with the coop is there were only 7500 or so brought to the UK. I have just driven from London to Scotland and saw only one other coupe, and love or hate the styling, people still stare at it.
cheers guys, keep up the good sensible debate !

My ears dont lie just wasnt impressive in my opinion, the exhaust note was so minimal and the engine was quiet, i was expecting it to be loude with thouse 200 horses screemin...but it wasnt! I think that a pulser would give them a good running also.
Big respect to mr2 astra GTE 8v, what a good car considering it cost me £400 and its had a recent respray, no rust, cd and cat one alarm bargin!! i sold a dissapointing Corrado G60 and havnt looked back infact what a waste of 2 years , bills bills bills... yawn yawn. Anyway im waiting to join the 4x4 league and over (well) 200 cavalli!!
ive had 3 great vauxhalls now and really like em!

The coupe is a quiet car, it's supposed to be. It's not a stripped out race prepped rally car. If that's what you're looking for buy a scooby/evo/pulsar. It's more a comfortable, stylish cruiser which just happens to be damn fast if pushed.

I test drove a Fiat Coupe Turbo in 2000 and I found the following:
Likes:
- Prefer the looks to a Scoob (great in burgundy)
- Did feel more powerful than a standard UK Turbo
- Liked the price (second hand)
Dislikes:
- Standing start acceleration is uncontrollable
- I personally didn't feel 100% safe going around corners at speed
- The overall handling /feel just wasn't as good as a Scoob
I then drove an MY00 with a PPP and that was it. The Fiat can definitely out-perform a standard UK Scoob, but a UK PPP is far better at any speed - can't comment on imports!! I'm sure you could mod a Fiat Coupe and get a similar improvement?!!
I still like the way it looks and I would have had one if it wasn't for the PPP...

You sure it was the 20v turbo? I've been in a couple and they really do sound good. The 4 cylinder 16v is a dull but the 20v reminds me of the old Audi Quattros.
I think they are a good car.
great engine,
cool styling (I'd second burgundy as the best colour)
but a naff chassis. It feels like the car is going to snap in half when pushed hard around a 50-60mph corner. Didn't inspire a great deal of confidence at all. Probably great if you mainly do A roads though.

I have owned both a 20v turbo Coupe and a modified UK Impreza turbo... liked them both - the Impreza handles the twisties more easily - the Coupe can keep up if you're concentrating on driving it well - but the Coupe will leave the Subaru standing in a straight line, especially with a rolling start.
Both cars were pretty reliable, so I enjoyed the two of them. I am currently without a 'fun' car and am running around in a Seat Leon TDI, but hope to add a (hopefully RWD) 'fun' car to the fleet later in the year - Elise S1 is top bet at the moment, don't particularly want 4WD or FWD again cos I've done both of those and fancy something different (although I could be tempted by Litchfield's Racing Integra as I mostly want it for track and airfield anyhow).

Having owned a 208bhp UK scoob and now an import 276bhp RA they are very different animals. Drove a Fiat coupe when looking my UK scoob and was probably close performance wise except the scoob was way quicker pulling off due to the grip and putting the power down out of slow corners. From the book figures the RA will do a ton in 12 seconds and from the gearing will touch 160 if you go to the redline in 5th. So it depends on which scoob you pick on .
