Dang, seems I missed out on a brilliant Saxo thread I'm not interested in totally reviving it or anything like that but there are a few things our good scooybnet community don't seem to know. First things first - tommy tank is a bit of a.......well........w@nk. But I'm guessing he was on a wind up anyway
Nevertheless, I was sadend to see people jumping down his throat saying 'saxo's don't make that kind of power' and 'they can't ever beat subaru's' This just isn't true! Many of the supercharged vt* make over 200bhp and Matts is expected to make over 250bhp reliably. Someone asked for a 0-100 time for a s/c saxo. The only one that I know of that was officially tested was Rob T's at 15.2 seconds and that's a s/c VTR (note the R). In short a s/c VTS and even an R would give some subaru's real trouble, especially once traction issues are overcome.
For the most part though I'd have to say that the P1 would probably have been quite safe. It would take a pretty special saxo to beat a P1 in the twisties (assuming similar drivers).
I know you all think they are cr@p but I still miss my saxo from time to time and can honestly say my scooby hasn't grown on me the same way. I suspect I have a secret hankering for a beefy import but well not go there in this thread Just as I take interest in the 400bhp+ threads on Scoobynet there are some interesting threads on SSC about the development of the s/c saxo's. What I particularly like is that the engine is being developed as opposed to just replaced Nova 2.0T style.
Just clearing up a few points and not looking to argue. If told to keep one for life I'd obviously have my scooby

I'm on your side mate. A standard VTS will give half the drivers on here a hard time.
I've seen a few modified saxos now, and Good though scoobies are, they are still not a hot hatch. There is something to be said for a car that weighs less than a fart with 150bhp and just FWD. And that something is ridiculous amounts of fun.
You get in, you put you right foot down in the carpet....and never stop accelerating, just understeer everywhere and generally have a barrel of laughs.
I still miss my FWD Mazda GT (even when I was driving an STi) and I know my friend misses his modified AX GT. IT wouldn't go above 75mph, but it would out accelerate anything...it felt like.

Never had a 'do' with a Saxo, but have on more than one occasion been impressed to find a chap in a std looking 106 GTi (essentially the same car) still on my bumper after 15 miles of hard charging on my old route from work.
They appear to be marginally slower on acceleration, but boy can they carry some speed through corners. As Colin Chapman always said 'for speed, add lightness'

No of course I wouldn't but that doesn't mean the saxo is crap! Just because I've moved on doesn't mean I feel the decision to buy the saxo in the first place was incorrect. If I bought I 911 tomorrow I sure as hell wouldn't come on here spouting off that Subaru's are crap. But just as we have some modded scoobys that can scare 911's just remember there are some spotty teens out there in saxo's that can scare scoobs

I own a VTR and I think it's a great car. It's good fun on the bends, plenty of lift off over steer.
People think they aren't that quick but they do get a shock. Ok, its not subaru quick but there are still loads of over cars on the road.
I will miss it when it has gone

I didnt mention the word crap . As hot hatches go I am sure the Saxo is very good but then again so is a Clio 172 or a Clio cup. HH dont do it for me, must be an age thing , been there, spun the wheels on that and torquesteered my way down the road.
You may like small FWD hatches fair enough but there is a point you reach where the car becomes undrivable due to too much power, FWD and chassis limits.
I do get scared quite regularly by very young hot hatch drivers as a lot see the scoob and see it as a scalp that must be got at all costs .

I once played with a 1.7 puma coming off a roundabout. The VTS was a little quicker but not by a massive amount. I personally would have the VTS over a puma but thats largely because I hate Fords

What's insurance like for an 18yr old who has just passsed her test ?
Our baby sitter is looking at cars and was tempted by a Suzuki Alto (eek !). Without wanting her to stuff her first car into a tree within the first few miles, I think a Saxo would be much nicer than a Jap yoghurt pot.
Is there anything insurance friendly that doesn't look lousy as a first car ?
I presume Saxos are safer than the AX range they replaced ?
(a friend's ex crashed one into a ditch with a concrete slab in the bottom, and was in hospital for month).
Obviously, if she wanted older male attention, an Impreza would be the obvious recommendation, but seeing how freely the testosterone flows on the main forum, it's enough to scare Graham Norton off

Its unlikely saxo's will be winning any safety awards! I can only assume they are better than the AX but they are not great. The VTS has front and side airbags and abs which helps

I had a 106 GTI when I was 20 insurance was £1400. Amazing little cars and in the dry handle better than a standard impreza turbo. Not in impreza`s league for power but they were much faster than peugeot claimed.

As an Ex VTS Owner I loved every minute of it!!
I had the car for 3 years and over 100K miles in that time.
I was lucky it was a company car so didnt really get to see any costs but I know the Insurance was over a grand when I got it at 21!!!!
I know the person who has it now and still "borrow" it for a play every now and again!!

Not had the pleasure of driving a VTS, but have been a passenger, and it felt quick! Beat some wannabe rudeboy in an E30 325 drop top by a fairly large margain anyway. I have driven the VTR though ( Y2K shape ), it's one of the most fun cars I've ever driven, beaten only in 'feel' by a MINI Cooper ( I reckon, anyway.. ), went well enough for a 1.6 8v, seemed to like the revs to. If memory serves me correct, it did approx 41mph in 1st on the rev limiter, with 40 miles on the clock. In black, it looked lovely too.
I'm currently on the look out for one, I hope the insurance won't cripple me, being only 18. I pay about £1200 tpft on a Mini with 1275, 286 cam, nice head etc removable front, buckets and harnesses, 13x7s, so can't see there being much difference?
