Jeep discs
#1
My Jeep dealer has told me my discs are worn out after just 20,000 miles. He said I was "very lucky" to get as much as 20,000 miles out of the discs as "its a heavy vehicle".
I told him I thought he was talking utter b0ll0cks and whilst I can accept that the pads might wear quickly, I don't expect to have to replace the discs so soon.
What does anyone else think?
Normally 2 or 3 sets of pads before you need new discs?

I had a Cherokee 4.0 Stealth. It did about 55k before it needed disk's, and I thrashed the knacker's off it all the time.
I fitted aftermarket pad's to it once but never again! Had load's of trouble with fade. Fitted genuine pad's, problem solved. Some dealer's fit aftermarket pad's but charge you for genuine one's , so make sure you are specific if you let them carry out the work.
Mac.

Thanks for replies guys.
Vehicle is 3.1 TD Grand Cherokee.
I previously had 4L Cherokee and had no problems with that one.
Dealers in Jersey are a joke.
Car was off road for 3 months just for them to partially fix a dent in the door (Is this why they call them "off-road" vehicles?). Dealer then managed to entered radio code wrong several times and completely screw up the radio
I now have a vehicle with damaged trim, no radio and knackered discs.
Yes, I have written to Jeep UK and await their response.
I got so p1ssed off waiting for the Jeep to come back that I bought a Pajero to tide me over. Lovely vehicle with lots of toys but not as much fun to drive as the Jeep.
Back to the discs, do people agree that you should get about 2 to 3 sets of pads per disc? Dealer says modern pads and discs wear at same rate as they are not allowed to use asbestos in pads any more.
Complete nonsense or any truth in this?

Wear rate of the discs depends on the metal content of the pads. Standard OEM pads usually have a relatively low metal content.
This gives good initial bite from cold, but are prone to fade after a couple of high speed stops.
Heavy duty or 'race' pads have more metal in them so they fade less, but they don't bite well when cold and they chew discs up.
I've usually manage 3 sets of OEM pads on my old Saab turbo (1300ish Kg's?) before the discs need to be replaced.

Got a Grand Cherokee as well - used to have a Cherokee, but when we changed it the dealer did warn me that it would be heavy on both pads & disks - I didn't get too specific as it wouldn't have affected my buying decision anyhow - just like I knew it would be heavy on fuel (4.7 V8) Not had it long enough to find out yet though !
BTW I've got through 4 sets of pads on the Scoob so far and I'm on my 3rd set of discs - I don't think there is a magic formula !
