Freelanders

I am thinking of getting a land rover freelander, anyone got one? What should i be looking out for when buying secondhand? any notorious problems etc etc. Will probably be going for the 3 door hardback diesel model.

Buy as late as possible and watch for all sorts of problems on the first two years in particular - on saying that, I'm sure some people have never had a problem ! (Er... diesel came later didn't it ?)
I'd either save up or do a PCP on a Rav4 D4D if you need diesel; or get a cheaper (than the Freelander) 2.0 All Weather Pack Forester with FSSH to make up for the extra mpg (but far better performance)

Most of them pull to the left, I think, and some much worse than others. Don't know of any other flaws, though generally they don't do well in customer satisfaction surveys.
Get some decent locking nuts for the alloys, the spare in particular tends to go missing. Nice in the summer though with the removable back.

The rear windows had a habit of shattering on early models.
Never done well in customer surveys. Believe the TD4 model has a BMW 2.0td engine which is nice, the older TD's where not too good.
Would rather have a RAV4

Used to work for a L/R dealer. Had allsorts of problems when they first came out.
V6 is fairly nippy, but you do have to work it - and bloody thirsty, try 15mpg...
TD4 is the one to go for.

Bought the wife an 18 month old 5 door TD4 last year and she loves it. Pulls well in all gears and is suprisingly car like round corners, not quite as good as my MY00, but not bad.
No problems so far, 4K miles and over 30MPG from the excellent BMW engine.
One or 2 trim rattles, less than the Subaru then! and the steering does pull slightly to the left, but not a problem.
A friend has the 1.8 petrol, gets 20MPG and it's noisier than the diesel.
Any other questions let me know.

Raks,
If your looking for a Discovery, at least get the 300tdi, (from 1994 on IIRC)
If memory serves me right, The 200tdi (1989-1994) had awful gearbox problems, horrendous g/box whine and 3rd gear was always a b1tch. The majority came back for complete new dash assemblies, at the time all done under warranty, the sun over time would breakdown the glue and the whole dash would lift off.
They're also getting a bit long in the tooth now. 300tdi is a pokier engine, and should go on for ever. However main dealer serviceing will be expensive though. They all leak oil, even the new RR so don't worry too much about that. All IMHO.
