I'm looking to get a car for track days only (needs to be taxed and mot'd though to go to and from) and was hoping for some sugestions for a sub £1000 machine.
Pug 205 is a possible but I was wondering if there are any rear wheel drive cars that are a possible?

IMO the best options are old S13 200sx or S12 Silvia.
Silvia would be cheaper and just as much tail end out fun as the 200 (Some people actually say the Silvia drifts better cuz it's chassis is more rigid).
Getting a good 200 for under 1k might be difficult unless you are able to do some work on it yourself. Big ends always need replacing on high milers.

Weava - what sort of cost is the mi16 conversion? Do you need a GTI 1.9/1.6 to start with or any 205?

Charade GTti. Weighs nothing and with its 1 litre turbo tunable to 150bhp easilly it would be pretty damn quick. Can pic them up starting at £5-600

Another vote for the good old Capri.
Imagine trying to find bits for a Silvia or an old RX7 when they break. Which, given that the car is a thrash machine, they will.
Forget the medallion man thing, 2.8 Capri's always were great, simple driver's cars. Tune up bits (A frames, uprated springs, poly bushes, anti dive kits etc) are still everywhere and dirt cheap. If it breaks, pop to the local scrappie, or buy a complete donor car for £100. 24v Cossie V6 motor slots straight in from a tatty Granada, or look for a tatty but sound Turbo Technics for over 200bhp.

Found a 91 Rx-7 Turbo with a years MOT on autotrader for £1,500 - plus quite a few non-turbo's for well under the £1k.
Almost managing to convince my wife to sell her 206 CC and for us to get an MR2 Turbo for her during the week and me at the weekends

It is a nice car and the summer is great with the roof down.
Wonder how cheaply I can get a decent MR2 turbo and still keep the CC. The 205 Mi16 is still tempting though as it wouldn't take up much room on the drive

Only for those that can't get the most from FWD 
The 205 is an absolute tool and superb on track, one of the most adjustable and fun handling cars there is With the Mi16 it becomes a scoob worrier As for sideways - piece of cake in the pug, enter corner - lift off - whooooooaaaaaaa major oversteer, back on the power and fly round the corner sideways - superb fun!

My friend Martin has an Mi16 Pug 205 (throttle bodies, management, quaife LSD etc) and it totally hammered the scoobs at bedford back in November.
My brother is currently building a pug 205 as a stage rally car - it will have the Mi16 engine too. Seem welded shell, cage etc. - dead easy to switch the gravel suspension back over and turn into a track weapon - they best of both worlds for him.
The Pug is a H plate 1.6 GTI in white. Body is mint - had 80K on the clock with every bit of service history and MOT since new. Mi16 engine will cost you about £300-400 quid - a few 100 extra for the conversion bits (lower engine mount, dizzy converter) etc
The car was £600 - what a bargin.

My old 205 MI16 was timed 60 in 6.9 and 100 in 17 dead, using the long ratio gears from the 1.9 GTI. I swapped that for an MI box, and it was quicker off the mark then, maybe a second quicker to 100, but the balance and handling are superb, and 4 wheels drifts are easy.
The MI conversion is very simple, I did mine in a weekend, bought a 1.9 GTI on a G plate with a blown engine for £300 and a Citroen BX19 GTI 16V with no MOT for £150. Use the BX wiring loom, it's very simple to fit as it's a separate engine loom. Move the rad forward and modify the BX engine mount to fit, no need for the dizzy adaptor etc, and the mapping is already spot on for the engine with the BX ECU. Probably the easiest engine swap I've ever done.

205 MI16 is looking like the one to go for - nice and small for fitting in the drive and cheap to start out with.

If the 205 is rusty walk away 
- these cars just don't rust - how many examples have you ever seen rusty
The body is galvanized steel, so you should have no probs finding a good 'un
