Straight line = boxter S
Most twisties (dry) = boxter S
Tight muddy c-class road = fugly
Wet b-c class roads = fugly
wet a class road = similar, poss boxter
In the pub = modified nova's
In short a well driven Boxter S will give a standard bugeye real trouble but some tasteful mods to the scooby changes things.

Done lots of miles in both of them. For me, the subaru inspires confidence in all conditions and I could personally drive it much quicker than the Porsche in any conditions, wet or dry, bumpy or smooth.
Straight line performance was similar at sensible speeds, although Porsche much quicker as you start to stray towards 3 figures.
Main Porsche advantage is absolutely stupendous braking, although overall it left me fairly cold.
In summary, to me the Porsche is overrated unless you are a driving god.
PS - I am comparing it to a UK MY00. Never driven a bug eye.

260bhp RWD V 218bhp AWD
It awazes me to think that people still think the scoob will be quicker? Even modding the scoob the boxster still has to be faster due to being 2WD.
Only a wet road and traffic light GP will the impreza be quicker IMHO.

Scoobs get the power from the engine to the wheels better than the porkey. Its a shame your compairing the porky to a new shape scoob, not the old shape. The new shapes just dont drive as well and there slower.
At least people wont hate you and will let you out of side turnings in a scoob.
My old STi 5 type R used to rip the doors off any boxer. It was great fun picking on them, aahhhh bless there cotton soaks.

"MY99 Turbo and now a MY02"
I agree Yorkie! Why do some keep hanging onto the idea the 02 is slow etc etc? It's a way better car than the classic shape, and I've owned 3 of those - 94, 96 and 98. My 02 PPP is more than capable of keeping up with an STi7.
As for the Boxster; never driven an S, but the other std model, fine car that I thought it was, is just too slow. Only did about 50 miles in one (alone), but it was enough to know it was too slow for me.
Cheers

From track day experience (250bhp classic) with Boxsters, the Impreza was 'at least' a match and seemed to close when slingshotting out of bends.
As said above, once into 3 figure speeds I'd drop back or hold station at best.

Toonman, interesting comments there as I am getting PPP fitted in the next few weeks, just need to book it in. From what I have read in the threads after doing a "search" it seems a worthwhile mod as I am sure you will have realised Rumour has it that the new MY03 PPP fits MY01/2 and gives more power (260bhp???). Anyone else heard this ?

I'm sure it's in this month's Evo that Prodrive are capping the power for the 03 WRX PPP at 250bhp, as 01/02 PPP cars have been getting STi7 power (260+) already.
I spoke to Mike Wood before I had mine fitted (Oct 02), and both he and the dealer told me cars were making 260+bhp quite easily (hence the cap on 03 PPPs no doubt). The dealer said it made it a nicer car for UK roads, although no doubt IMG and Prodrive would dispute this!
Depending on where you are, if you fancy checking out an 02 PPP, email me and I'll take you out for a spin sometime. I'm in the very top part of N Yorks:

MY99 with full decat - had a blat with a boxster S and he was losing ground on the dual through every gear, this obviously irritated him as when the dual went single and to a 50, although I was quite a few cars lengths in front, I reduced to 50 and can storming up and obviously thought he'd try a share a lift by getting in my boot
Still - they are pretty pokey though - and a very well balanced car when it comes to handling.

Scoobs get the power from the engine to the wheels better than the porkey.
The Scoob will have traction benefits, but the Porsche will show it a clean pair of heals once moving.
Even a new STi will struggle, same power but the Porsche is lighter ( - 1295kg/1470kg) will have better PATW (due to lower transmission losses), better aerodynamics, better handling, better grip, more responsive engine (NA Vs Turbo).

Why is it that in all of these Scoob vs ... threads there's always the 'yeh but as soon as you mod the Scoob, de-cat, PPP, blah blah it'll do this that and the other'?
Surely this approach applies to the car it's being compared to as well

Ok, lets not turn this into a classic V's fugly debate. What you can't argue with is that they have the same power and that the fugly does weigh more...therefore its just maths as to which is quicker in a straightline You're right though, we are talking is bawhairs of a difference.
My point is this, a boxter S is a far more expensive car than an MY03. Most people will pick a car that is at the limits of what they can afford and then a few other condenders that cost less. For the money of the boxter you could get an MY03 and make a fair few modifications to make it perform better and still have some spare money. BUT, you can't change the badge on the front or the build quality, etc. So, really it comes down to what the poster wants. Performance? Image? Handling?

I have to agree with big sinky but I'd probably have another car for the money. Can't think what of the top of my head but if you can afford a boxter s then you've got some good spending power
