It did win the EVO hot-hatch shootout though didn't it?

(Mind you that was only because they left the CTR and Clio Cup out of the equation )

What is a GT180 by the way?

erm strike the renault off the list, very slow in comparison, think the others will therefore feel slower.

hmm time to start the next stage of mods me thinks!

The renault too slow? It'll blow the Cooper and the GTi out of the water and stay with the R32.

However saying that if you've got the money then the R32 would defo be my choice!

Having owned a modded MY00 (full decat, Link ECU etc), in day to day usage, the Cup has 90% of the pace, and feels 110% as quick. As far as being too slow in comparison, it'll leave the CooperS eating dust - see the Autocar test between the two if you need any proof.

Despite the build quality issues I've had with mine, I still think it is great fun - and for a new car, it has a fantastic smiles per pound ratio

Airwolf,

"Strike the Renault off the list, very slow in comparison,”"??? The Clio Cup is hardly slow 0-60 is 6.5 and 0-100 is 16.9 compared to the UK WRX which is 5.7 and 16.9 respectively. You would not notice that sort of difference on the road and in the dry there would be no difference in handling (just don’t lift of mid bend). So I would not discount the Clio as an inferior car.

Never said it was inferior but it doesnt cpmpare to a modded sti UK with 340bhp but then again it never would. I must admit though the handling felt better which really surprised me! I'm now considering it as a play thing to add to the arsenal!

Eh The scooby has a turbo which usually makes it feel quicker than it is! How can you're cup feel as fast? The 172s I've been in (admittedly normal ones) feel **** slow despite actually being quick. Maybe you needed a dawes My car can feel like the starship enterprise when she dials up 1.2 bar from very little throttle input

Wink

SB - I did have a Dawes after the Link came off (which was running 1.3~1.4bar)

My point was, for the same given speed - say 70mph - you feel as if you are travelling quicker in the Cup than you did in the Impreza. Similar to the feeling you get with yer **** 2cm off the ground in a gocart where 30mph feels like 100mph!
Perhaps the differences between the standard 172 and the Cup help here too (thinner glass, less sound deadening, less weight etc)

I'll take you out for a blast in the Cup if you are at KH etc and you can see if it feels different

I have a Cup and its fast, I understand what saxoboy says about a false sense of speed but I only find this on the motorway.
On the twisties this car is so much fun, and its very quick, people think its just a crappy clio, which is half the fun.

Most fun car i have owned and it has the basics as in electric windows, RCL and CD player, thats enough for me. Its all about the drive.

Scott

The Cooper-S may be slow, but the 206 GTi-180 will NOT be...

It has more power than the 172 and weighs not much more than a Cup & less than a normal mk2 172, so will NOT be slow!

The Cup is a weapon though.

Another 'big up' for the 172 Cup. Certainly is a ***** out motor with old school hot hat characteristics. Certainly feels quicker than my old 306 Rallye.

ADL -

How do you know it is gonna be ****?!

There are no performance stats available yet, so anything you "may" have read is pure speculation.

At the end of the day, the current 206 GTi (138bhp) is 0-60 in the mid 7's, so the 180 version must be quicker than that and should be quicker than a Clio 172, going off the fact that it has more power and less weight!

Remember that Peugoet also do their acceleration tests for 0-62mph (100kmh) and it is 1/2 laden (driver, passenger & full tank of fuel), so until some of the mags have actually tested the car in the traditional 0-60 & 0-100 way, we won't really know...

Also, it's not purely about straightline speed!

Be good to see how that little Pug 180 turns out. Shame they didn't give it more "WRC" style lairy bodywork though.

The 180 is going to be a nice motor, but i can't see it being as hands on and as raw as the cup.

CooperS slow 'leave for dead'

It has a near identical PWR to the clio cup (155bhp/tonne vs 161) but better torque. No one has still pointed me to a test that rates the Clio as a better car than the CooperS but look at any EVO/CAR test or the only Autocar test I've seen with them both (from Jan '03) and the CooperS comes out on top.

Add in that whilst the Cooper is £1500 more expensive it has far better specc'd AND has 5 years free servicing for £100 AND far better residuals, I know where my money would go out of the two...and it wouldn't be in a french car

For the rest, the Peugeot 180 Gti is going to be a flier (although only as quick as the Clio and Cooper as it weighs a little more), and the R32 whilst a good 50bhp more, weighs as much as an oil tanker so the performance is likewise going to be similar to the others..but the Golf costs £10k more and it is not £10k more car, and certainly not 'hooliganism'.

My money would go on the CooperS, as fun as the rest, the most chuckable car I've ever driven (and I've driven a 172 and std Pug GTi). It will cost you less, go as fast, give a far better image, far better service and be worth twice as much when you come to sell it.

....and if you have an R32 budget, get it to Birds for the Hartage 220bhp conversion, that'll give it over 200bhp/tonne and it will genuinely leave the others for dead.

Actually no, if fun was what I wanted, I wouldn't go for any of them, I'd go second hand and get a proper RWD sports car. E30 M3, 968CS, etc.....or even better, get a caterham/wesfield and a solid hatch to commute in

Quick Reply: Clio Cup, Golf RS2, Cooper S or GT180
