I'm about to start looking for a 306 GTi-6, Just wondered if you had any advice on what i should look for on the car (a buyers guide if you will)

A friend told me to stay away from the interior which is leather and suede as the suede looks awful after wear, is this true? Most of the GTi-6's have this interior.

Do they all have the same features? ie Automatic wipers, etc

Cheers

My mate had one which had 130k on the clock and the seats looked fine.

Or go here carsurfer.co.uk and click 'Car reviews' then Boy Racer and they have one on the GTi-6.

Exclamation

www.peugeot-gti.co.uk is a good source of info.

I had a 306 Rallye and the only fault that I had was a sticky 'box.
When you're test driving, have lots of downshifts at mid-high revs to size up the gearchange.

Cool

It depends if your looking at the phase 1 or a phase 2 car.
The Phase 2 (facelift) version has the automatic wipers, aircon etc where as a phase one doesnt have the automatic wipers and aircon was an optional extra.
If i had the choice id go for a Phase 2 (having owned both a phase 1 and 2) as it felt better than the phase 1 (except the interior isnt as nice as a phase 1 with all the leather inserts etc).
Look for FPSH, any recalls on pre 98 cars (2 i think, one for re routing of fuel lines) and clutches can be a problem along with head gaskets (but my car(s) never suffered from that).
The turning circle is a bit of a shock (its quite large!) and if you get it wrong in a multi story car park you may look stupid
Good car though so happy hunting

The alacantra sets in mine are fine but i have seen some that are really tatty.

Things to look for.

if the clutch clicks when you depress the pedal the cable is shafted they all do this at some stage as the clutch cable is routed to near the exhaust manifold worth getting it checked incase it is something more serious.

brakes. my car has done 45k miles and is needing its 3rd set now because they warp. im pressuming this is a cooling problem or the oem brakes are sh!t3. im going down the mintex route this time.

Stereo. head units ok but the speakers are awful and easy to blow so turn the stereo up loud and look out for distortions ect. (might get you some money off to put some decent ones in).

if it is an earlier car they didnt have the cd changer as standard look out for badly fitted after market ones.

Stay away from black and pearlescents black goes brown and the pearlescent has trouble staying on the car.

check the electric windows and sunroof. i had the drivers window repaired under warranty it is a common fault apparently

The phase 1 cars are a lot lighter (no sips ect) and seem to go like stink but not as well built. I would go for a Phase 2.

how much are these going for now anyways ??.

My wife recently bought a 99T blaze yellow (bronze colour) Gti-6, ex company car. I must admit its great fun to drive with nice handling, and enough poke to surpise cars like the new shape 172 and Cooper S. Peugeot sorted out the horrible lift off oversteer problem on the phase 2 cars so its a much safer buy.

You can get them up over 200bhp if you uprate the manifold with chip, exhaust and filter. Great fun.
