Golf / Bora / Passat PD TDi owners: cold starting routine?
#1
My company Passat 130 is coming 1st March ... could someone tell me what the cold-starting routine is? Is it glow-plugs etc? I'm a diesel virgin, so treat me gently
Also, what are the running-in instructions (if any)?
thanks in advance, Craig

Turn the ignition on, wait for the glow plug light to go out, turn the key to start the car. Its that easy. Oh and as it has a turbo, let it get some oil flowing before you move off, similarly after a run give a minute after a run to cool down before switching off.
As for running in, the usual rules apply, no big speeds or wide open throttle. No journeys under 3 miles, and get the oil changed at 1500 miles.

Do you get an oil temp gauge?
I have seperate oil & water temp gauges on my Ibiza PD130 TDi Sport and it's best part of 10 minutes before the oil temp starts to even move. Best not to thrash it during this time.
Chris.

Chris -- the Passat 130 Sport only has a water temp gauge: shame, an oil temp would be useful too. Unless it's in the computer readout somewhere.
By the way, is your Ibiza set up for variable service intervals? When did you first change your oil?
Thanks also to Reffro

Golf TDi...wait for light to go out, usually instant but bit slower on cold days. Not supposed to need the oil changed until 10,000 miles but ours was done at 1000, 5000 (at our reqest and cost!) and then as per service schedule. I thought 10,000 was too far to run it initially.
