Hi Peeps,

Would someone mind telling me what the main differences are between the Mitsubishi evo 5 & 6...If anyone has photos of both it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Chris

The 5 is for the people who cannot afford a 6.

The six will always be the daddy.

Mine in particular

Hardly any difference, they share the same running gear and engine.

And presumably then the 6 is for those that can't afford the 7?

The five has a nasty seat trim, ugly alloy wheels, poxy rear spoiler, inferior internal engine components, cooling system and suspension/braking system + loads of other small details. I would still have one over any scooby though.

The 6 is THE definitive evo. The 7 is just it's ugly brother so it does not enter the equation. The 5 is still a very nice car with exactly the same power output as the 6 but if you are modding then the 6 is the better platform to start with.

Don't think about buying an evo. Just do it. Life ain't a rehearsal...

try the faqs and the brochure section on www.lancerregister.com

go on you wont regret buying one, i owned a my01 and no disrespect to the impreza cos it was a great motor but my evo's twice the car the scooby was, faster , meaner, better handling, better looking, more comfy, easier and cheaper to get more power output need i go on, if the right 5 comes up then i would personally buy it cos the main differances are cosmetic i.e wheels, rear lights, front bumper, rear spoiler

The 5 is for the people who cannot afford a 6.

The six will always be the daddy.
YYY, it's down to personal preference, most educated people know that the 5 is realy the daddy. More agressive front end, nicer rear lights and better white dials instead of those gay blue ones. Add this to the fact that the 5 is a lot rarer than the everyday 6 and they do 5's in yellow, we know that the 5 rules.

Seriously, when I was looking for my Evo I could of bought a 6 so it's nothing to do with affording a 6. I bought a 5 because it was the cleanest Evo I looked at. When he pulled up I was godsmacked, in your face car, in your face colour. I knew then I had to have it.

I got a 1999 T plate Evo 5 in yellow with 19000 miles FSH without a mark. For the same money I could of bought a 1999 T plate Evo 6 in sky/pascal blue with 38000 miles with a few marks.

I choose the 5 as when I seen and drove it, it blew me away.

Differences between 5 and 6 are as follows:

Reshaped front bu,per and airdam
New wicker type twin rear spoiler with adjustable attack angle
Newly designed aluminium wheels
New front lower arm ball joint installation and lowered front roll centre
Forged knuckle assemblies and rear suspension arms made from forged aluminium
Added baffle plate in oil sump
Bigger oil cooler
Intercooler water spray has separate bottle in engine bay with windscreen wiper wash bottle moved into boot.
Bigger turbo inlet (64mm vs 56mm)

I think there's probably a few bits I've left out but that is most of it.

Is it worth the extra over the E5 depends really. The pistons on the E6 as standard are better but if you're going to tune it to silly powers then you'll be replacing them anyway.

Also depends if you prefer the look of the 6 to the 5.

In reality, there's probably not much to choose between them so go for what you like best.

Thanks very much for all the replies and photos. A few more questions if you don't mind.

Did the 6 not come in yellow? My favourite evo colour by far.

Will £15,000 - £15,500 get me a tidy unmodded FSH low mileage example?(evo 5)

As far as reliability goes what are the evo's like?

Are they expensive to service/maintain?...i'm not to fussed about fuel consumption...

Finally....just sold my 02 WRX, will the insurance premium be much higher?

Regards,
Chris

I do know that only the EVO 111 and EVO V came in the yellow, they do look even LOUDER in this colour!

So many people over look the EVO IV, which had the best power to weight ratio of all the 'newer' Evo's! It just doesn't look as good because it hasn't got the flared arches and doesn't stop as good because it hasn't got the Brembo brakes that the V and VI have!

The IV has the same interior as the V, is as quick as a V and you can get a 1996 one for about 9K....IMO great value!!

Dom.

PS - I used to own a IV if you haven't guessed!!!

Nope. It is the best colour.

Will £15,000 - £15,500 get me a tidy unmodded FSH low mileage example?(evo 5)

I should think so, in fact if you look on the MLR I think theres a yellow one for sale. Failing that there were two yellow 5's in top marques last week for around that price.

As far as reliability goes what are the evo's like?

Mine has never failed me, the only problem I had is clipping a curb and fecked the rear diff, ABS sensor and driveshaft. All my own doing mind.

Are they expensive to service/maintain?...i'm not to fussed about fuel consumption...

Not aslong as you find a decent tunner that will service it right. I had a main service a few months back for £200, Plugs, oil, filter and AYC service. the AYC is best serviced at 4500 miles, but thats only fluid change and the going rate for this is about £90. I pay £50 to have mine done but you can do this yourself without much hassle.

Finally....just sold my 02 WRX, will the insurance premium be much higher?

Mine went up £300 when I changed my insurance over from my MY95 WRX import. Its now at the same price it was last year. £1500 FC with 5 years NCD. I'm 27 with no points living in Manchester which is a high risk area, so i'm told.
