Cheap Acceleration ?
#1
Acceleration seems to be the one thing car freaks are after, tops speed is largely irrelevant, handling is nice to have but the headline news is always how fast a car accelerates.
Have been in loads of quick cars and been impressed with a few as drivers cars but as for acceleration not many have actually impressed me, 911 Turbo was one that did
What do I need to buy to get that apocalyptic mindbending acceleration, the kind that you cant just (as a Passenger) carry on what you are doing and have to take notice.
I am after the most acceleration for the least money, handling (i.e Twisties) a secondary consideration, Suggestions please !

Cosworth relatively cheap to tune and they produce huge amounts of torque which is the all important factor.
Even the big power skylines in the UK cant beat the 2.99 0 - 60 set by a 4WD saff running circa 440bhp.

TVR's if you can get an old/cheap one. Lotus, Porsche etc. Not sure what you mean by cheap but they may be affordable and are realivelt cheap for the performance.
Modded cars - take ANY car, modify it enough & it'll go fast. It'll look crap though if it's a run of the mill car compared to TVR's, lotus's, Porkers etc.

A-ha, a topic close to my heart!
For purely acceleration, (everything else second) here's what you could be thinking about....
Up to £1,000:
Nissan 200SX - great engines if sloppy handling. With some minor mods you're looking at 200bhp and 0-60 around 6.5s.
Up to £2,500:
Beginnings of reasonable motorbike territory. For the money, will always beat a car.
Up to £4,000:
At this kind of money you can start looking for a Jap spec MR2-GTS. 220bhp and 0-60 in 6s as standard, 280bhp and 0-60 in the low to mid fives, quarters around 13.5.
Up to £10,000:
Diminishing returns at this stage. To get under 5s to 60 you're really looking at kit cars or highly modded Skylines etc.

Yeah, I did mean cheap, i.e. most for a couple of grand, the 200 SX was what I had come up with but I would imagine a lot of them are shagged by now, still worth a look though, a fifteen hundred quid for an L plate + a chip, induction kit and SS exhaust should give over 200 bhp, alternatively I could get a loan and get something newer but I have been loan free for ages so dont want to cos I pay for it for a couple of months and then get bored of the car and really bored of the payments.
As for bikes, I agree, nothing accelerates as quickly for the money but I have three small kids and cant really take the risk, I have a mate with a knackered arm, four months on and he still hasnt got feeling/use back, it aint worth it, I know it can (and does) happen in cars but I cant take the risk with a bike at the moment.
A cossie would cause the missus to divorce me and given that the newest ones are 11 years old and Fords legendary rust protection er I dont think so, unless you pay the money for a minter I think they are bad news much as I like them.
Having seen the discussion on old Porsches, the message seems to be to leave well alone unless you have reserves of cash. I suppose if you want to go fast you have to be prepared to pay for the priveledge !

Well if you're talking that kind of money, you've got to be thinking along the lines of things that were fast around the late eighties. You could also consider things like the:
Vauxhall Senator 3.0 24V, quick and possibly reliable/refined
Capri 2.8i, horses for courses
Escort (yuk!) RST, if modded I suppose
Big engine BMWs, you can easy afford a 325i or 540i, but they could cost you a bomb to run and look after
Big old Jag XJS, same as above, but imagine having a 6.0 V12!
Mitsubishi Starion 2.6T, imagine asking for parts!
Renault 5T, some people rate them.
Rover Maestro T, ummm....
Vauxhall Astra GTE, mingin' handling but strip out the spare wheel, the seats and everything else that unbolts. Should be quite quick. If nasty.
Come to think of it, yeah, you're probably best off with a 200SX for that kind of money....

I'd go for the 200sx.Even if it's handling isn't great as standard,it's still RWD so loads of fun.Easy to tune and there's an active BBS with a very good supplier on the forum.

I never heard about the 200 SX that it's a bad handler.True, it's never been mentioned with the like of Clio Williams or the likes. But it had good reviews when it was new in the late eighties. I considered them seriously some time ago but snobbery got the best of me.

s14 already has 200bhp bog standard - ok call me a liar - its actually 197. handling is lively but that makes it all the more fun .
cheap to run too - major service from a Nissan dealer only £147.

If your after cheap thrilllz (oh yeah) ive just bought a £400 astra gte and its amazing, it goes really well and im so happy with it considering i sold my 190bhp Corrado G60 i can certainly say that 4 days driving my astra has been more enjoyable than 6 months with my corrado.
The beauty is that if something goes wrong it wont cost the earth to fix and it just keeps on going and going, the corrado used to need attention every 5 bloody minutes.....
VW never again.
All i need is a 70's afro to go with the digital dash and the car blk as well... LOL

Err, how do you know it keeps going and going if you have only just got it ?
My old GTI just keeps going and going but as its been in the family 15 years (I won it in the daily Mirror in 1988) I feel I can comment !
Can see why you would though, always quite liked the GTE, plus if it breaks either fix it from the scrappy or bin it and get another.

To maximise acceleration you need to maximise power-to-weight ratio (ignoring effects of grip/transmissions/aerodynamics).
So you want a big engine in a light car. To get the power down and not loose huge amounts to transmission losses you want rear wheel drive.
Two words: kit-car
A kitcar with a superbike engine will hit 60 in sub 4secs and if you get a well respected chassis they will out handle an awful lot of cars. If a bike engine is too mad (it was for me) then a cossie turbo lump or a tuned red-top Vx2.0 will give similarly mad performance.
I had a 200sx once... three words: bag-of-sh1te ;-)
