Thumbs up

Any Motorsport BMW is going to be good to drive! Evo's have certainly dropped in $$$ to a level where you get a lot of performance car for your money.

Have you tried running a search?...there have been quite a few M3 based discussions over the last few months.

Soon someone will come along and tell you that 325bhp 2WD is not as fast as a 212bhp 4WD car with a decat on..........................

Mate has one which I've driven a lot.

I personally don't like em for the following reasons.

1) Odd offset steering and pedals
2) Steering too high geared
3) Brakes too sharp - over servoed
4) Engine too peaky
5) Gearbox too slow.

May sound odd - but its makes the car very difficult to drive cross country at any speed. I found it impossible to get any sort of rhythm or flow to my driving.

Quick in a straight line though.

Been in one quite a few times and raced the very same car. Standard scoobies cant live with them on the straights and will have a hard time on the "twisties" if its dry too.

Might go down this route if I decide to get rid of the scoob the only problem with them is the badge

Used to have one! (obviously <-- )

Fantastic car - simply the best i have ever owned. Replaced with an Mcoupe with was crude in comparison and no faster. Handles great, very comfortable fantastic looks and great reliability. The M3 always has been one of the great all rounders for any money and the evo was no exception! Miss mine dearly.

Pick up my M5 tomorrow though so may not miss it for much longer!!

ps its very much a buyers market at the moment so you can haggle for a discount!

Some evo's with 60K are hitting a mere £12,000

also - coupe is much better than the saloon or cab (they both had 10% softer springs and dampers compared to the coupe)

brilliant car, would love to get one, but a bit expensive at the moment compared to my scoob. Would only look at the coupe tho, it looks the best, and every car show on TV just loves the m3 and 3 series in general

Question

M3 Evo

I find your commnets about the M Coupe intersting. How can the M Coupe be the same speed as the EVO when the M Coupe has a better power / weight ratio?

Also, EVO have timed the M Coupe 0-60 as 4.3 and 0-100 as 12.5 on a number of occasions.

Thanks

Sonu

I went out as a passenger in one around Elvington and it was pretty quick. It felt very well balanced(as much as you can tell on the wrong side of the car).

As has already been said, only go for the Coupé. The E36 M3 saloon is, to the average joe bloggs, a 318 with a few M3 bits chucked at it, and it won't have the nicer seats found in the Coupé. The cabriolet also has a dodgy image, unless you like being portrayed as a hair dresser?

In my opinion they look top notch, go like stink and have an excellent build quality. They're pretty realiable too...

I'd rather have an E46 M3, but they're a lot more cash.

Rich

PS - co55ie, which BMW place did you work for?

Have driven loads due to working for them in the past. Have also done corporate track days and had high performance driving tuition in them too. To be honest they are not upto much let down by the poor superflexy chassis and the engine is fairly fragile too. More of an executive express than an out and out performance car in my opinion. Other downside is they look so old fashioned now park one next to a montego at the supermarket and you will probably get confused as to which cars yours.
If you get one dont forget to get a Burtons suit and a pot of hairgel to finish your new image off nicely. Dont be worried if people think you are a double glazing salesman either this is all part of the M experience.

They are very good cars, and at the moment are currently excellent value - as the E46 M3 second hand market is opening up.

I disagree they look outdated - while in general the E36 (esp. 4 door ones) look dated, the Coupes with the Sport/M3 body kit is still a head turner in a big way - I still prefer the back end and the side ways low slung profie of the E36 M3 to the E46. The best colour to go for is Estoril Blue or Tecnho Violet.

In terms of handling, its an M3! Its going to be good, and better than the very vast proportion of cars on the road. I don't deny a hardcore Scoob Sti may be marginally better, but you get a great interior, leather M3 sports seats etc. You will really feel 'safe' when you get in the car and shut the door - it feels so well built.

In addition, it has a 321 bhp engine, and the straight-6 is regarded as one of the finest in the world!

It will also have all the toys.

Things to watch out for:

1. P-reg - mild facelift - differnet front grille, although very minor. Interior spec increased - auto diming morror etc.

2. Get it checked out for the Vanos

3. Avoid SMG - the E46 has SMG II which is excellent, the SMG I in the E36 was a dog.

Co55ie: some very constructive and balanced comments.

Tell me, what image did your Sierra portray? I'm not sure about you, but I have yet to meet a double glazing salesman driving an M3. And did your sierra shine in the car park next to the Montegos?

Hi sonu - they is basically not much in it - the M3 evo has a 0-100 time of 12.2 and out in the real world and on track i found myself hitting corners at the ends of straights at pretty much identical speeds.

May have just been the fact that i found the M3 easier to drive fast? Also i think my comment of crude was a little unjust - mine had AC Schnitzer suspension fitted which IMO was great on the right road but a pain during everyday
