Ah.
Looking at it on the child practicality side of things rather than out and out ability.
The 4WD is a bonus, but it's an expensive addition to the usual spec.
Having a look alongside Rav4, Freelander, Jeep Cherokee and assorted estates.

Likewise, I like having a *bit* of extra ground clearance, and needed space for two kids + general stuff \ holidays etc.
(in fact now it will be three kids as we're expecting another in August!)
I wanted something that could be "sensible" and practical as well as being fun to drive and sensible insurance \ fuel costs, it came down to the Forester and the Octavia in the end, but the Skoda had better fuel economy, better build quality, and was bigger inside (both width and boot size).
The octavia is fun to drive (222bhp), good economy (37mpg on Mway), sensible insurance group (14), good warranty (3yrs unlimited mileage) and really does everything I could want in one package.
