i think that in most cars, the brake warning light and the handbrake light are seperate ones. probably the switch on the handbrake is gone. all these IMHO of course.

Probably the handbrake switch has been fouled by a ginsters pasty wrapper or an old copy of the current bun!
Try spraying a bit of WD40 on the switch, failing that, hit it with a hammer!

or the wire has rubbed to earth on some form of metal object in that vicinity.........or it IS combined with the pad sensor light (depends which model i supose) or its the low fluid level warning lamp..............
