I have a friend with a 99 volvo s40 turbo thing.
Car wont idle properly, compression on all 4 is good, no air leaks.
When it does idle properly, for a few secs, it suddenly cuts out.
Fuel pump is running ok. Plugs are OK. Ignition system seems sound
Lambda seems to give strange readings around 3-4 volts??. Unplugging makes no difference to how car runs. 4 coloured wires on the sensor, not the normal 2 white/grey/black
There is no engine management light illuminating at any time.
Anyone any suggestions as to the problem, or know anywhere to get info ??

I had the same problem when I had a Volvo T4..the way to cure it is to make sure that your mate is using SUPER unleaded!!.. sounds funny but worked for me.. the normal unleaded caused power loss and rough idle

Over the weekend, I remembered something from when I had a V40 T4, a couple of years back ... apparently there was a spate of them getting sticking valves due to carbon build-up.
Is your mate's car a T4 or 2.0T? If it's a T4 you must use SUL or Optimax. If its a 2.0T, they are designed for NUL (95 octane).
Either way, get him to fill it with Optimax and cane it HARD for about 50 miles -- it may help flush out any deposits. Or he could try that "10K Power Boost" stuff which is supposed toi be good at decoking.
