Question

Just thinking for a change, maybe later in the year

I've done the hot hatch thing now and the turbo 4x4 road rally car (Impreza), so next was looking towards some go with a bit of luxury. I quite fancy an S4, probably a 1999 as you can get these now for 15k or less. Anyone know anything about them, what to look for etc, running costs etc?

What else would fall into the same category as the above. After a bit of luxury but it needs to have similar grunt to the Impreza , but not an E36 M3 - used to like em but not anymore! And any info on other recommendations too

Any info appreciated really

OK.....stealth power for the price of a Mondeo 1.6......reado on:

Audi A6 Estate (don't laugh) 2.7 ltr Twin Turbo ....should be able to pick one up for about 16K.
This is the same engine as the S4 but de tuned.

Remap at anyone like AmD , MTM or Jabbasports will give you 350bhp - add a miltek exhaust, cats, lowered suspension and dampers, stick on some nice brakes and RS Alloys and you have an RS4......all for about 19K!

Talking

I had the German bug for a while, soon solved that by taking an 225bhp Audi S3 out for a test drive

One word to sum it up....dull

Depends what you want from a car I guess, no denying they are fantasticly well made and look the nuts. I just found it boring to drive.

I just went to a dealership with my posh suit on said I had 25k for a car want to test drive a few, can I have a go in an S3 Can't speak for the S4 though... suggest giving a dealer a go though, I didn't want to mess any private sellers round test driving their car..

Downside is they keep sending me junk mail about fricking Audi's now

Well...

I've got a 330BHP '99 S4 and it's not dull....

I think however that 15K will get you a high(ish) mileage 98 (pre-facelift). I paid 21.5K about 5 months ago for mine from a independent dealer with 35K miles on the clock. The Impreza impresses straight away during a test drive whereas the S4 takes you several '000s of miles to appreciate what a good car it is.

Hope that's of some help

Thanks for the replies guys

Mega - Well it probably wouldn't stay totally standard as I'd have to sort out the suspension, brakes and a chip & exhaust.

Jeff - been having a look on Autotrader and theres quite a few MY99 S4's up there for 15-16k with 40-50k miles on the clock hence why I'm now interested! One even had heated seats and SAT NAV amongst the extras! The cheapest seem to be the Nogoro?? Blue and the Imola Yellow - which suits me as they also happen to be a couple of colours I really like!
Have you done anything else other than the chip? Also good to see that a couple of RS4 bits will make it see 450bhp

Any other 15k suggestions?

Question

Serious question -

What do you need to do to get 420-450 bhp from an S4? And what does it cost.

Can the gear box/diffs take it? I assume you need a better clutch etc...

polarbearit,

AMD, among others, offer the upgrade to the RS4 K04 turbos which gives 400+ bhp. They make no mention of changing anything else so assume the engine is easily up to it. Of course, you'd have to do brakes and suspension too

However - say it got you 450bhp after doing, thats almost a 200bhp increase. How much would that cost on a scoob? The Audi upgrade costs £4250 fitted!!!

450bhp in an S4 equates to almost 300bhp/tonne

From the AMD site:

RS4 Turbo Upgrade giving the S4 a massive 400+ BHP. Includes rolling road time, mapping, fitting, 'before/after' plots of power and torque, test drive. Workshop time about 4 days.
see: http://www.auto-amd.com/s4.asp

Any other thoughts on a 15k car similar to the S4?

I've changed the following

AmD re-map to 330BHP & 390 ft/lb
AmD fitted short shift
HiSpec 335x32 rotors with Monster 4 pot calipers & DS2500 pads
Chassis stabiliser (braces the transmission to the chassis under the car).

The car now stops, turns & goes (it really goes )

Thanks Jeff
Do you mind me asking the sort of costs involved with doing that?
Also, whats the deal with Audi servicing, what intervals and cost? Can't be worse than the scoob can it?

If I changed the exhaust for a Milltek system with sports cats I should be able to get 350-360 BHP & another 40ft/lb of torque (430). But the exhaust with the cats is £1200 ish.

The S4 is basically the same engine as the RS4 and Audi uprated the turbos & re-worked the head (Cosworth did the work) as well as the intercoolers etc. Standard a RS4 is 380 BHP and with a re-map 430 is relatively easy. High 400s are possible with enough dosh.

The quoted service intervals are 20K (although you can do an oil change at 10K). Or you can use the onboard computer to tell you when a service is due.

The re-map was £850
Brakes £1100
Short shift £200
Chassis brace £ 350

I've had AmD do the alignment as well.

Well thats food for thought - the only problem for me is I'd have swap the skyline for an R32 to afford an S4. Still I need to realign my car selection as I currently do all my miles in an R33 GTR and don't use my runnabout at all! That is going to kill the residuals on my car at this rate...

If its only £4250 fitted to get 400+bhp thats excellent, but if all the other RS parts are needed (ala MTM) surely the cost will be nearer double...

Oh and the stock brakes are crap is that right?

Blimey re the R33 - sure will bring the value down with shoving loads of miles on it, I used a scooter to keep the miles off my scoob, but haven't used it for ages either!!!!

Well according to AMD its that price fitted for that power, might have to drop them a mail! Seems like alot of car for the price now, and easy upgrades

Although with that power if they don't do the brakes and sus I'm sure that will need it too!

As for the stovck brakes, dunno if they are crap, as I haven't driven an S4 yet, maybe Jeff could comment? The stock brakes are:

Type Dual diagonal with anti-lock braking (ABS 5.3), diagonally split dual circuits, brake booster servo and electronic rear brake pressure proportioning, HP2 4-piston front calipers
Front 12.6 in. diameter ventilated discs
Rear 10.0 in. diameter ventilated discs
Quite a good site here: http://www.s4-mtm.com/

Coming back from the NEC today I planted the big left foot on the M1 to get away from a irrating 540i and forgot I was still in 4th (we where both doing 60 at the time) and had to lift off suddenly when I realised I was doing 120+. The damn thing really pulls hard in the gears) The 540 wasn't sat on my bumper afterwards.

The torque on these things is amazing

What sort of fuel consumption did you get before and after the chip Jeff?

Slightly better after the re-map, I guess this is because you use a smaller throttle opening.

Looking good Jeff @ that RS4 piccy!!!

Is the spoiler on the back of yours an option or do all the UK cars have it? as I've seen many pics without them?

One other thing, well 3 actually! On the first page you mentioned the 98 car is pre facelift. Do you know what the difference is and when the facelift occured. Also, know any good BBS's for Audi?

Finally, your AMD chip, are you able to turn it off and return back to the OEM program. I've found out about APR which lets you store several different programs - seems slightly cheaper than AMD, or slightly more with a few programs. Know anything about them? http://www.fontain.co.uk/accessories...e_upgrades.asp

Cheers

The spoiler is from an unknown source. It was fitted to the car when I bought it. I don't think it is an option or an Audi part....

The facelift occured around Oct/Nov 99. The differences are the dash layout/center console and they changed the front calipiers. I'm sure there are other changes (might have different lights) but I'm not 100% on the others.

The AmD re-map does not allow you to revert to the orginal map. I'm aware of the APR system but I've not tried it. The major difference between the way AmD do things and all of the other tuners (MTM, ABT, APR etc) is that AmD re-map your car by running your car on a rolling road, downloading your ECU map into a laptop which then acts as your ECU. They then adjust the map in real time until they get the correct settings for power/ torque and reliabilty. This new bespoke map is then put into your existing ECU. The other tuners produce a generic map per model and sell you this without checking it on your car. You pays your money etc....

Mental, waaaaaaaaaaaaay out of my price range!!!

Cheers again for the other info Jeff I've read a few things about a guy who had the APR chip and is now running the MTM and thinks its much better. Fontain Audi Specialists are near me who do the APR stuff or its off down to Quattro Sports for the MTM or AMD for their's - choices choices! Need the car first though

Jeff,

How does the re-map affect your insurance - I assume you have declared it

How would it compare to insurance for a MY00 Impreza Turbo?
I just renewed my insurance on my Impreza for £523 (only mod is alloys).

cheers,
Andy
