Depends what you want, with £40k I would (and have) buy a comfortable cruiser AND a ***** out raw performance car.
For just one car, the M3 takes an enormous lot of beating as an all rounder.

The M3 is an awesome car, but what about a used 996? 
I changed in the summer, with an albeit smaller budget and went for a Boxster. A big drop in speed, but a true feel good factor every time you drive
