hi all,

just wanted some input here.

22B engine seized in jan and has been off the road since. The day it failed I bought an £800 205 which I love and have been driving ever since with no problems.

The 22B will be ready in a month or two but when it comes back, it isnt really going to be the kind of thing I want to drive everyday, and leave in town etc.

Would have used the pug but it lacks that certain something.

Anyway, having had 4 golfs and an audi, am big fan of vwg cars and have always liked the corrado, looks build quality (spoiler to be honest).

I have found what appears to be a nice example for 3.5k, it is a K reg G60 (supercharged) in immac condition with 70k miles and full vwsh, and electric everything. More importamtly ABS. I would like to know that the car I am driving most of the time has abs (the 22b doesnt either rmemeber).

This is a car I have always wanted, but a lot of my friends keep saying it is a lot of money for an old car with high milage, or you could have X for that much etc. Thing is, there isnt really anything I can think of that I would prefer of any age for that much money, which is really the max I want to spend on a second car.

I am a single 24 year old man, with no care for luggage carrying, no worry about insurance who likes driving massively. Not fussed about resale values etc. I buy cars cos I love them rather than because they can make or lose me money.

In short I suppose I am looking for support telling me to go for it. Does anyone have any experience or views, positive and negative equally relevantr. Also alternative suggestions.

Has the supercharger been rebuilt? I understand that tends to be needed about 60k...

I've not got specific experience with the G60, but a good friend just sold a VR6 - it had done over 130k and was trouble free

As Polarbearit say's it's all about the Supercharger. If it's only a few k past the rebuild then - go for it.
IMO, the VR6 would be a far better buy. I've never heard a bad word said about them.

Edited to say - I'm waiting with baited breath to see the 22b.
A year off the road must be killing you.

Brun, you hit the nail on the head, thats why I am looking into buying myself something decent, plus I am beginning to realise that with the amount spent on the 22B there arent going to be many occasions when I can drive it, so I would like my second car to be something that I am not ashamed to drive!

I know all about the potentially dodgy super chargers.

I reckon turbo dynamics could probably help me out there if necessary.

Basically the VR6 is too much money for a second car, I have hhad turbos and normally aspirated cards, I thought it was about time I had a supercharged car, and this is the cheapest route to getting a corrado with abs. Otherwise I would make do with a 2.0 8v.

the 22B, hmmmm, well to keep you posted.

crank loom fuel rails, manifold (with 8 injectors) all ready.

new pistons had to be ordered from the states after thankfully finding out in advance that the dish was not right or the valve layout, and the gudgeon pins were rated to only 200bhp!!

they will be here in about a month.

in the mean time, billet valves and assembled heads with double springing and new retainers, stem seals etc, as well as some combustion space work should be ready in about two weeks.

IN short, in a month all the bits will be together.

Shouldnt take long to build engine, but am not sure how much work they will want to do over christmas (damn tradition). Once built, has to be shipped over to dyno for mapping at earliest opportunity, then brought back and installed, and tweaked for problems.

Overall an optimistic date would be two months. If it is ready I may even consider taking it to well lane 4.

It's only 19 miles to Well Lane for me, so i'll be there to witness your motor. Hope it's ready
Just out of interest. Is your 22b one of the 16 UK cars?
If you're clued up on the old supercharger situation, and you have someone near you to help with any probs, VW it is then.

Ive got a G60, im not really happy with it and will be selling it in 3/4 months time for an EVO 5 hopefully. Even with it chipped and producing 200 lbs of torque it still feels 'sloppy' and not quick like my previous car an Astra Gsi 16v.

If you are worried abpout the state of the charger there is a electronic test you can do using the digital display in the dash, this will show if the charger is producing adequate boost.

G60 with 200 lb of torque feels soppy nd astra gsi feels quick??? WTF?

Sounds a nice genuine car that adam, there still a few nice examples about!

There a Ex jabbasport Golf rallye knocking about, but i tink they use a bigger blower, but its 303 BHP at the wheel!!! yes the wheels!

YES IT DOES,mine has 185 bhp and 200lbs of torque, around 145 bhp at the wheels and it doesnt seem mega quick to me, dont get me wrong the handling is wikkid and much better than the astra but it doesnt have the urgency of the astra, also the fuel ecconomy is crap and doesnt really justify its performance.

each to there own but im counting down the days until i change the g60 and get some real metal!!!

mozzaIT,

thanks for the advice.

I still bought it yesterday and have been smiling ever since.

But then part of that was to do twith the prgress report I got back today on the scoob.

Its all coming along nicely, and the carbon fibre bumper looks great too!

I am reckoning on a couple of months now! but thankfully have a new toy in the corrado to keep me smiling, even when the 22B is capable of everyday driving.

Adam

I had a facelift G60 for 3 years and ran it up to about 85k miles. Had the supercharger rebuilt at about 70k miles with uprated bearings, and also gasflowed - cost was about £800 (the basic rebuild was about £350). The main thing with these is not to wait until it's broke - the part that actually fails is the toothed rubber belt between the two shafts in the charger (usually fails through a combination of age and the bearings wearing out, thus increasing the load on the belt). If the belt snaps the two spirals hit each other and you can kiss the charger goodbye - c.£2k for a new one, not to mention all the shi1te that the engine might have sucked in. So if it hasn't been overheauled, or you don't know, I'd STRONGLY recommend getting it done asap.

I loved my Corrrado - well built, reliable and fun to drive. One of the best improvements I found was replacing the front suspension bushes with Powerflex - aparently a pig of a job, but really tightened up the feeling of the front end.

The only problem I had was a snapped cambelt 10k miles after it had been replaced - the tensioner seized and took out the belt. Luckily it was idling at the time and did no damage.

Enjoy

Apart from insurance, ur not going to find much in the deffernce of the running cost of a g60 conpared to a vr6.

Although supercharger is recommended overhaul every 70k, u'll find most cars out there have done 125k without any problems so dont be scared of a few miles. However jabbasports charge £400 to do what needs doing

Find a nice standard example with fsh and keep it that way, when you come to sell it in a few yrs, ull see all ur money back
