Anyone who knows anything about a 306 GTi-6
#1
Been looking to buy one for a while but had no luck. But when I do found one I'd like to do a bit of modding on the engine.
A while ago I was asking "Peugeot 306 GTi-6 or Golf VR6" and basically the majority of the voting was for the Pug. But someone said the engine was good for 200Bhp by just putting on an exhaust, anyone know what exhaust??
Cheers.

I owned one for just over 2 years, the worst car i have ever ownerd. It was total F*cked after 30,000 miles and i din't cane it that much. VERY dangerous handing on the limt, limt very low.
Now very happy with my type "R", go the VW route Recaro. You might like to get a VW Golf Turbo (150 bhp) and mod it!
Cheers

Second that, had MY00 306GTi 6 and it was crap, did 30,000 miles and flogged it, No exhaust would boost the power to 200bhp, but a throttle body conversion for £2,000 would

Mega - WTF?????? 306 is widely acknowledged to be THE best handling hatch ever made.
Recaro - look out for TonyBurns on here, he'll be able to give you the lowdown on these excellent motors. If you want a car that handles then stay away from the Golf.....

I had a 306 GTi-6 in 1999/2000
Personally thought the handling was superb for a fwd car. Not really that underpowered in its class.
Not driven a golf so won't comment but there is no question that the build quality with respect to the interior in particular is far superior to the pug (from what I've seen anyway)

I've got a 306 Rallye ( stripped out 306 ) and it's a great car. Good handling and a decent engine. Only really under-powered when compared to the new breed of ultra hot hatches ( CTR, LCR etc ) Will keep up with Clio 172's and the like no problem. Never had any reliability issues myself (touch wood )
Never driven the Golf but I would assume they are a bit more comfortable than the 306, with the 306 being more of a rewarding driving experience. Horses for courses i suppose.

I had a 306 XSi before the Scoob. Had 2yrs of great driving out of it. The handling was excellent, much better then Golfs of recent years (4-Motion excluded, not tried one). XSi could do with more power, so the additional ~50bhp of the GTi-6 would be a great combination.

I had a phase 1 GTi-6 and it ran flawlessly up to 65k when I chopped it in for a scoob. Absolutely storming car and I'd go back to one if I had to sell the scoob
It was me that said about the exhaust on the earlier thread.
Speak to Colin at Pug Performance (web search will find them) as it was from him I found out about how restrictive the 306 manifold is (like spaghetti junction!!) and you can replace this with a much better manifold that should give about 20bhp for 600 ish quid Thats 187bhp straight away, fit an aftermarket exhaust and induction and you're already at around 200bhp. I've seen GTi-6's with over 220bhp - they are very strong engines and good to easily take 200bhp.........
As for handling - its superb Hence why it kept the Hot Hatch crown from most magazines and reviews for about 3-4 years, even when newer stuff was coming out they kept saying the Pug was better!!! I had lowering springs on mine, and adjusted rear torsions and it handled like it was on rails (Eagle F1 tyres), could corner as fast as my scoob when it was standard - they are seriously underestimated cars! Provided you master the lift off oversteer then you'll have buckets of fun and it won't be dangerous at all
Hope that helps
Neil.

I'm glad to see more people saying that the Pug is a great little car, I was beginning to think I'd got my model numbers mixed up after the first replies!
The handling IS superb, but will catch out the unwary/novice. The tail can be very 'alive' but this is a good thing allowing for superb on the limit adjustability. If you want a hatch that simply understeers then get one of any number of alternatives.
The earlier 'Phase 1' cars have a reputation for not being as well put together as they might have been. Each one however, is different. Bear in mind that 205's had the same reputation and there are plenty of them still going strongly.
The tuning potential is there if that is your thing, look at breathing and ECU first, then things get a little more expensive. The stock internals are good for 250bhp, and 300bhp with some changes.
It depends what you are expecting from a car really. The Pug is a fine driving machine and very involving but some may find this annoying on a day to day basis, or when covering long distances. The Golf is a more refined and relaxed car, but none of the recent versions will put a smile on your face like the 306!
And as for being underpowered well I disagree, despite having 'only' 167bhp they will - in the real world - still give a very good showing against more modern opposition.

Yup ive owned 2 of the said cars (a 96 P reg and a 97 R reg) both were excellent cars but they did need to go back for a recall.
Never had any problems with either really, they do handle very well but the do have 1 serious down side which can be a real pain and thats the rather large turning circle otherwise its probably if not THE best hot hatch that you can get as a second hand bargain
Phase 2 models were better than the phase 1's, the phase 1's had a better interior though (IMHO), clutches could be a problem but only seen one or two that had this fault. Some will still be covered by a warranty (possably an extended one from Peugeot) so if you can keep a lookout for that
Fantastic drivers car
Get one you wont be sorry

I have one for sale just now in excellent nick with sensible mods but dont know how to post a pic (although it is on the www.quadconversions.com web site in the Peugeot gallery - gold one)
They are a crackin handling car and have passive rear wheel steering which is not widely known and could account for the "lively rear end" statements, anyone looking for a spec or able to put a pic on give me a shout at the e mail on my profile,

Stueyb, this recall only affected the GTi-6 and that was pre 98 models only (it should be stamped in the service book that it was recalled and if the owner is good then they should also have the letter from Peugeot to go with it )

I have a 150BHP XSI for sale at the moment. The handling is almost as good as my Scoob. If your interested e-mail me on steven@giliberti.freeserve.co.uk. It's a 1996 with under 35k miles. Loads of extras.
Check out http://www.ecosse-peugeot.co.uk/ for styling and tuning. Throttle bodies make for great gains.
