Anybody tried an S60 T5 or Saab 9-5 Aero???

Saxoboy -- the thing is, the F40 and Saab are probably on about the same gearing.
The 9-5 peak power is about 5200rpm, so it'll be geared in top to about 30mph / 1000rpm.
The F40 peaks around 7K if memory serves, so it's geared to around 28mph per 1000rpm.
Also the Saab must weigh nearly 50% more than the F40 ... so the comparison isn't as unfair as it seems ... it's just the F40 and 9-5 are designed to have their best torque at different places in the rpm scale.

A mate (honestly) is looking at either of these. Scoob is a no go .. he is impressed with it's go and grip ....
... but 90 percent of the time he's pootling back and forward to work (2 miles) and doing dual-carriageway blasts and doesn't want the cheap looking interior, poor fuel consumption and general raw-ness of the Impreza.
These both have 250 odd BHP, good spread of torque, nice interiors, well finished and are NOT BMW's (most importantly to him).
Anybody driven these, I assume above 30 mph they will be very similar to the Scoob in a straight line (although 0-100 stats I have seen don't back this up .. Volvo 0-100 in about 18, Saab ??).
Any comments.

Wifey has the 9-5 estate. I like it, nice and comfy, mid-range poke is superb, economy is not to hot, servicing is reasonable as is insurance. Haven't tried the S60, but then I love SAABs. Just trying to persuade 'er indoors that it should make a trip to Abbot Racing as all my previous ones have. She ain't wearing it
Remember when Volvo were first advertising the T5 and claiming how it beat the TVR, porsche 911 etc from 50-70 in top, SAAB retaliated with an ad showing the rear 3/4 view of a 9000 from a car it was overtaking with the caption "SAAB 9000 Aero, as seen from a Diablo". IIRC the 50-70 time in top for the aero was quicker than an F40!

How does it compare to your RS?
You have your chipped eh? Then they'll both have around 250 ish through front wheels. Good comparison point and I suppose the Skoda will not have been designed from scratch that way.
I thought 5th gear acceleration would be superb, how about 30-70 though through the gears, he does like using the gearbox otherwise he would have bought a Turbo Diesel.
Keep the info coming

Ain't used Trent Saab (aka TSL) for the Saab, bit of a trek for me. I've always used Abbot Racing and found them to be very good.
I really like the performance of the Aero although it must be said that it is an estate and is very lardy (think its 1500+kg). Deffo not a car for back road blasts (although I do get pleasure from hoofing it along to the dismay of other road users). Particulary like the over boost feature which gives you 10-15 seconds of mega boost just for overtaking. I'm not allowed to drive it much anymore, but I do like it.
Compares very favourably to the RS, especially in the mid range with the overboost. I'd definitely buy another one.

Don't know about the Saab (although the torque the turbo-engined cars is legendary) but I borrowed my boss's T5 the other night to see what it was like. They're on the company car list and I'm opting back in - won't go into the details but I'm loads better off that way - and wanted to see what it was like.
All the usual plus points you would expect - build quality, comfort, performance, impressive spec. Fantastic motorway car and on the back lanes? It handled like a pig on castors.
Get your mate to try one. He'll know in a thrice if it's for him.
Cheers

.....forgot to say.....
If he's looking at £25K or so for a car he ought to have a look at the new 9-3 4 door Sport Aero - 210 BHP and inter-galactic spec for around £23K.
Cheers

I'd also suggest he looks at the S60 D5 -- more torque than the T5, and **awesome** in-gear grunt
Not too shabby off the line either: 0-60 in under 9, sounds really good too. It does not feel or drive like a diesel. There's no question that point-to-point the D5 is every bit as quick as the T5 or 9-5, while giving 50% more to the gallon.
I had a test drive in one, and the trip meter's average fuel consumption on the current tank was 44mpg . And this is in a dealer demonstrator with everyone thrashing the **** off it

That might have something to do with the fact that top gear on the F40 is good for 202mph!!!! It would be similar to measuring the performance from 20-50 in the saab

which would explain why magazines always quote it and why you see, on here, people asking for 50-70 in top rather than 0-60. I believe he probably gave that as an example/little story as it related to the Saab and the Volvo. Maybe he'll explain why he wrote it.
Back to the thread, I tried the 9-5 3.0 TiD and I actually quite liked it. Have to agree with Brickboy that in real road terms, either the TiD or the D5 will be quicker than their petrol bretheren, and nore economical. Of the 2 I'd probably choose the Saab.

The 50-70 in top is good for measuring engine flexibility but it's not really fair to compare a car that tops out at about 150mph to a 200mph beast as the ratios will be vastly different. Lets face it, the F40 would totally destroy the saab for accelertion.
In answer to the thread question....No...sorry

If the 9-5 is geared to around 30mph/1000rpm in top-what does it redline at?Most turbo cars hit the limiter at a minimum of around 6000rpm with some into the 7000rpm's.Seems like very long gearing to me.I would have thought more like 26-27mph/1000rpm.

Don't know specifically about the 9-5 but the T4 I used to have, and T5s, have their peak power at 5200rpm, but are redlined at 6500rpm. 5200rpm is the theoretical point where torque = power in any internal combustion engine.
In practice there's no point revving them past 5500rpm, better to change up and you're right in the fat part of the torque curve.

If he's interested in the new shape 9-3 Aero, that's out in January 2003. Some very good reviews of the lesser 9-3's regarding the driveability:
http://www.saabscene.co.uk/ubb/ultim...;f=21;t=000039
Saab have now teamed up with Hirsch performance to create a 305BHP 9-5 - think this would be too much though!
As for Abbott Racing - they have an excellent reputation amongst performance Saab enthusiasts. Only thing they dislike is the price! Abbott seem to cater more for the 9000 and 9-5 than TSL too. (To even things out Trent Saab also have an excellent reputation!)

The gearing ratio for the 9000 Aero in 5th is 30mph/1000rpm.
Rather long for my liking, but a few speedy Saab owners have had a lower final drive fitted.
Does make for comfortable 3 figure cruising though.

My last car before the scoob was a 9000Aero. Very comfortable, comes with every accessory you need. Very fast on a dry straight road.
In the wet though! Front wheel drive, no traction control, no LSD, you could still be fighting with the torque steer and wheelspin at 80!!!
Hopefully the 9-5 has these problems cracked?
