Find the most expensive one, and thats it.

Pics will be posted at the weekend.

Edited to say, not the cab, the black turbo

if you want you could make a 944T look like a 968 http://www.clubautosport.co.uk/944968.htm

Probably be a bit lighter too with fibre-glass panels

Don't bother with the 968 wheel....get yourself a Momo Corsa & the correct Hub Kit...looks awesome. Which bits did you get from Prestige ? The guy who runs it is a nice bloke (I've visited him to get parts before).

If you need parts (like wheels, Cups not those aweful Design 90s) talk to Simon Butterworth (http://www.porsch-apart.co.uk/home.cfm) who has always been excellent when I've dealt with him in the past....

Seamus my old buddy

I have had a look at these recently, and I have gone for a a 944 turbo (same chassis as a 968). These cars have awesome performance, [whisper]impreza beaters[/whisper]!

Cheap consumables, and its a Porsche!

Mail me for more information, I will have mine in a few weeks.

Heh heh Had a feeling you'd go for a Porsche after I saw you last, pleased it's not a Boxster! Are you going to the Navigator at Stoke B on Wednesday? We can catch up then.

Looking forward to seeing the new car, only driven the standard 944 and liked! Also the 928 GTS Hmmmmm

Reckon something along these lines for my weekend car plans.

Great interiors, cheap insurance, cheap parts, very little depreciation, what more can you want!

I have had a look at a couple, niether were really what I want, I just did not get that feeling of wanting either, although I nearly got my wallet out for one of them.

I do like the idea of 300bhp for just a 400 chip map!

I will mention to Clare about Wednesday, but it should be OK.

Cheap insurance? Tell me more!
Always fancied a 968 for some reason, but never driven one. My friend had a 928 GTS and that was something else..

Be good to see you on Weds, I have dropped you a mail.

Go for the 944T. The 968 especially (and the 944S2) have problems with the single chain that runs one cam off the other (sorry, can't remember which the belt drives) because it isn't checked as part of Porsche service schedule. I paid £1300 for new cams in an S2 and the 968 is even more. Also the 16 valve engine is very difficult to get anything more out of whereas the 944 turbo lump can give lots and lots.

They do beat Scoobies BTW and after a bit of money my turbo would waste most things, until I broke it.

I went with a new turbo and wastegate, MAF conversion, slots in the badge panel to help the intercooler and a chip and it put out 280bhp before it lit up 265/40/18's at 4,900 rpm every run. Estimated at 330+ with the same lb/ft. Now it just fills up my garage until I get it rebuilt, this time as a 3.2 hopefully.

Fen

Edited to add cheaper to run and more reliable (even at 12 years old) than a b****y MY99 Impreza too.

I have a few copies of Porsche post, and have looked in the yellow pages section.

Went to look at one today, but as I say did not have the "feel". However I did look at one the other week and I very nearly parted with cash, although I went with a fellow Northants 944turbo (and S2) owner and he though I could get better for my money.

The seach continues...................

My wallet stays firmly at home since my microlight moment of weakness (and on my wedding day!).

I have a friend who has an early 911 who is well into the Porker owners club scene, I'll drop him a mail tomorrow and see what he can find out.

Finally I have been relieved and I can go home now. Only a 90 minute drive and I'll finally be able to get some tea..

FYI, I've been looking for a 928 for some time now after counting the 968 out for looks alone. (Personal Pref.)

www.autotrader.co.uk will give you a rough guide to prices you will be paying for them, but the best advice I can give is to get an OPC (official Porsche Centre) mechanic to check out your purchase.....(about £250) before you hand over your cash. If a timing belt goes on a 928 its time to kiss £5000 goodbye.

Good luck with your search.....I've heard that Black ones hold their value better than the others.....as do the manuals. Im not sure if they did a tiptronic, my specialist area is the 928.

Regards

The Baron.

Problem with OPC mechanics is most weren't in the game when these cars were coming in for service (mine was one of very few that went to the Exeter dealer for service).

Try www.titanic.co.uk/944 and joing the mailing list if you want a turbo. There was a bloke selling a low mileage red one on there last I knew.

I've had 3 turbos and an S2 (and 2 911's) and a good mate used to be a mechanic at the dealer before he went to Merc as service manager, so drop me a mail if I can help.

A couple more things I forgot.

Yes, there was a 968 tiptronic, but I think it was 4 speed when the manual was 6.

Most people just get the belts changed as soon as they buy the car anyway; it's all that is likely to go wrong so consider it warranty.

I'd still skip the 968 and get a '44 turbo.

My mate may be selling a decent red '87 one actually, but they had no LSD and 220 BHP back then whereas they went to LSD, 250BHP and leather in '89. All turbos had climate whereas it was only an option on S2's and 968's.

There are basically two variants of the 944 Turbo....

951 ('86-87)...220BHP with LSD as an option. The good things about these are that they spool up the (smaller) turbo faster than the later cars. Peak boost is .75 (guage should show 1.75) They have different hubs/wheel offset/brakes than the later cars which makes updating the wheels or brakes a royal pain in the ***.

952 (87-92ish)...250BHP. Introducted in 87 as the Turbo S, the 952 has the later 911 hubs/wheel offset/brakes so you can put 911 wheels straight on and use 911 Turbo brakes. The 'S' was dropped in 88 and it became the Turbo. They have a larger Turbo than the earlier cars and can feel sluggish peak boost is .82 (1.82 on the boost guage). They introduced the car in 87 with a special edition called 'Silver Rose' which has unique paintwork and interior as well as all the 'go-faster' bits underneath. The Silver Rose keeps it's value extremely well.

The 968 will not feel as quick as the 951/952 but around a track the 968CS will leave it........

Jeff,

Very close, but this is a subject close to my heart so I'd like to pick you up on a few points, just for the sake of absolute **** acccuracy.

951 was the internal model designation referring to all LHD 944 Turbos, 952 is the RHD version (and RHD n/a cars are 945's).

The 220 bhp cars were made from '86 to '88 (MY as with Scoobies, ie production starts after the German holidays in September). '86 & '87 cars have not got ABS, so their hubs have the different offset. My first '44T was an '86 that my mate now owns and he just bought Mille Miglia Cup 1 replicas in the correct offset this summer. Choice is not so wide as for '88-on cars though. It's easy to tell the offset if the car has standard wheels because non-ABS have 'tele-dials' and ABS offset 220's have flat alloys with slots around the edge like 928's of the period.

220's also have no LSD (it was optional), smaller brakes (still 4-pots) and a smaller turbo (K26 I believe) as well as thinner drive shafts and lots of other detail stuff that was not as beefy as later cars.

For '88 a special 250bhp edition (usually known as 'Silver Rose') was released with pinky silver paint, LSD, Koni Adjustables (height and rebound), bigger turbo (K27?) & brakes, special (pink tartan basically) cloth, lightweight windscreen, forged alloys and no sunroof. Production figures of between 1,500 and 1,675 are claimed but most agree 77 came to the UK. Later cars were available to special order in other colours (because the pink was horrible) but they all have no sunroof and most have tartan seats. For reasons I do not understand they seem to command little or no premium.

In '89 Porsche upset Silver Rose owners by upping the standard car's spec to basically the same but with a sunroof and normal windscreen. This is the 250bhp model, sometimes called the Turbo SE and has all the best mechanical goodies of any 944.

A detail change for '90 was the move from the rubber rear spoiler to a fibreglass wing (known as the bridge spoiler) plus leather sports seats. Less good was the replacement of the Koni's with non-adjustable Boge suspension and the forged alloys with similar design cast alloys.

Production ended at the end of '91 although the turbo convertible ran in '92 (only).

/anorak off/

Not sure about the 968CS being quicker than a '44T. The M30 option (standard on Silver Rose and '89 cars) is basically the same suspension as the CS and can be fitted to any ABS '44T, and the extra grunt of the turbo car should make up for the slight weight saving.

The CS is a good car mind, but the 3.0 16-valve engine just doesn't respond to tuning. It had an M030 option with better suspension yet and cross-drilled discs (that can be fitted to '44T's but at a price) and 6-speed transmission as standard, although I understand the 5-speed turbo box is more reliable.

I have a 944 turbo with Glacier Blue metallic, linen leather, M30 suspension, stereo upgrade, FHS, but it has 152,000 miles and the engine is in bits in my garage waiting for cash to rebuild it. And it isn't really for sale...

The link from Jeff is good, but cars in 911 & Porsche World tend to be optimistic on price.

The Turbo SE was known as the Turbo S in the rest of the world except the UK (if you want to be really retentive)
