Question

Did they ever make one? If not, was there a Mugen special which fits a similar bill?

there is a 220BHP Type-S, but never a type-r.
Saying that, a lot of people use Type-R decals etc to, um, enhance the looks of the lude, and there are a lot of tuning bits, but it will never be a Type-R unless Honda originally make it a type-r, can only get close.

There was a Japanese market Type S, not a type R and I'm not sure of the spec, but it was uprated, but certainly no Type R in any market.

Honda never made any Prelude Type-R's, not even for Japan. The nearest thing is the Type-S, which has basically the same engine as the Accord Type-R.
Also, Japan has never had an Accord Type-R (that car is Euro only). The nearest they had is called the 'Euro-R'.
