Thinking about breaking the piggy bank for one of these. Anyone know where I can find out the service intervals/costs/major services details?
ALso anyone know of anything to be wary of?
Cheers

Mate of mine has one, it's pretty much the ultimate car IMO. It's a beemer so it tells you when it needs a service, but it seems to want it (ooh sir) every 6,000 miles.
His did in back tyres at about 10,000 miles, £570 a pair, though you can undoubtedly get them cheaper.
Feckin great car, huge depreciation so buy carefully. His is a 01 model. List was 60k with all the satnav toys, telly etc. got it for £50k with 2,000 miles ex-demo and its now worth around 40k with 15,000 on the clock.
Wouldn't buy one out of warranty either, very complex car, his had a few electrical gremlins.
Alternative is the E55 AMG Merc.

First hand experience. I bought a March 2001 (E39) model about two months ago. I can honestly say it is the best, most complete car I have owned (which includes two Imprezas - MYOO and RB5 WR, three M3s - E30 and E36x2, and two Porsches - Boxster and 911/996).
Mine was £42,000 (new cost £57,000!), with only 6,000 miles on the clock - an ex BMW GB car which I bought through my local dealer (who has got to know me rather well).
Upsides - massive build quality and performance (interestingly 0-60 not that special compared with 4WD-types - say just over 5 secs, but above 50-60mph would slaughter most if not all comers up to silly speeds i.e. 155+ (limited); 0-100 better than all but TVR Tuscan/Cerbera types. Also, pressing the 'Sport' button adds another dimension to throttle response/steering.
Downsides - fuel consumption only real issue (if you are that bothered - I am not). On a run say 26mpg, down to 17/18mpg in daily use.
You need one of these cars - believe me.

Could always go for its smaller brother the 540i
For the price of one (£15-£20K for a good one) then spend £7K on a fitted supercharger conversion from Linden Special Vehicles and it will beat even the M5 -
540 with supercharger on 7psi = 407BHP, 385lb/ft (standard is 290BHP and 325lb/ft)
M5 = 400BHP, 380lb/ft
Was a review done in Total BMW with this in the last issue and they claimed it to be a better drive than the M5 as it was an auto version (Steptronic)
You can get manual 540's as well and the sports models all come with the M-Tech suspension (same as M5 but differently rated due to weight difference)

Drive one - you wont want to get out, I promise you!
Big car, massive power, rwd, big smiles!!!
Make sure you get one with BMW warranty though, your wallet will take a battering if anything goes wrong, they are fairly bulletproof but as with any 400hp V8 - repair bills could be big!!
